91 on beeradvocate which is considered excellent.

Stone has higher rated, but definitely worth trying. And this year's could be much improved. Plus they are introducing the cask variant which could bring out a slightly different flavor mix.

This reminds me that I need to try one of my aging wootstouts. Hopefully, they have become more balanced with age.

pretty much any imperial stout is rated high on BA.  they also have a tendency to pour seductively into a tulip with notes of rare haitian cacao and charred french oak.  a rigid but delicate head stands proudly atop like a creamy beacon with hints of copper and 17th century earth.....

/farking hate BA.

I hate beer rating sites. Well, I take that back. I think the "rating beers" portion of beer rating sites are dumb. The sites usually are good for discovering other beers I might want to try based simply on finding out what exists out there. But the aggregation of opinions, both credible and completely amateurish, is a waste of time IMO. Nothing anyone else says about their experience tasting a beer will give me any indication of whether I will like it or not. And the majority of people writing the opinions don't know enough and are far too swayed by current trends and a group-think approach.

Looks like I'll miss this by about a month, unless something changes in my schedule.  I would be happy to blow a day's per diem (and more) on an event like this.

The only imperial stout I've ever had was Old Rasputin.  It was ...good.  My beer guy (yes, I have a beer guy) had it in so I figured I'd give it a shot.  I generally like stouts, but it depends on my mood.

or any imperial/ double IPA.  And any sour (american wild ale).  But throw a pilsner or lager or wheat beer on there and it gets massacred.  The site is also very american-centric.  Those aren't the 250 best beers in the world.  Those are the 250 best beers in the world as determined by a user base that is 98% American and who drink primarily American craft beers with limited access to imports.

The list does not claim to be a list of the top 250 beers in the world, it is a list of the  Top 250 Beers, as rated by their users.

The list changes with the fads. As long as you understand that and do not consider the list and the reviews to be bible, the list and reviews can be useful.

oh yeah, you are right.  I prefer it over RateBeer, which is like BA graded on a curve.  Everything at RateBeer is about 4-7 points higher with a cap of 100.  Untappd tends to be less haughty and pretentious than BA.

That, right there, gets me the most worked up. The only argument I have ever gotten into with a stranger at a bar was over pilsner. Okay, I concede arguing publicly with a stranger about beer is extraordinarily silly but it happened so I'll just move on. Anyhow, it was at my local watering hole that happily gets some pretty decent beer on tap. Unfortunately, 75% of the taps are IPAs and DIPAs. I asked the bartender, a friend of mine, if there was anyway he could convince the manager to spare at least ONE tap for a good world-class pilsner. Any German lager even. What about Weihenstephaner? Paulaner? Anything? The guy next to me at the bar turns toward us and says, "Flavorless old world crap! Don't bother!"

Even here in "metropolitan" southern Maine I couldn't get my hands on any last year. I have several "ins" with the local distributors and despite their best efforts they could not get any. I just wanted two bottles. One to consume and one to display.

I blame Wil. Just because.

Don't bother with beer rating sites. If you're looking for something that says "Hey, you like XXX beer, can I suggest something similar to it?", then just use untappd which is pretty good at beer suggestions.
