Gig103: "Disabled passenger tries to use condition to get extra leg room for no charge; is sad when it fails"
Gyrfalcon: "Unfortunately this information was not provided in advance and therefore while our crew endeavoured to assist Mr Cawthorn within safety policies and procedures, we were unable to meet his requests on this occasionNo, the airline--and everyone else here on Fark--is missing the entire point. They didn't,in fact, attempt to assist this guy at all. They had their "policies and procedures" which are apparently cast in stone and didn't bother to deviate one bit. You are supposed to notify the airline ahead of time: End of story. Was it impossible for you to do so? Tough f*cking titty.Did the flight attendants ask anyone if they would mind changing seats? To be upgraded if that was their preference? Apparently not--because there's no mention of that being done. And as far as his not being able to pay on the flight--you move the guy to a different seat and then charge him the difference when the plane lands, dummies. It's not like he can flee the airport without paying, since he kind of has to go through the entire place to get out of the building. But clearly the flight attendant, like everyone here on Fark, did not think of that. They thought--as you all did--"We can't charge his credit card for the ticket, ohnoes! We must not give him a free upgrade because that would be wrong!" And so they didn't. Nor did they think to ask another passenger if they would mind changing seats, because "That wouldn't be 'fair'." Or they thought--as you all did--this guy with one arm and one leg is just trying to scam the airlines. I'm surprised nobody suggested he cut off his own limbs so as to get free goodies around the world.No--this is just a failure of imagination and a blind adherence to THE RULEZ because they are THE RULEZ. And how it is is "safer" to have a disabled passenger stand at the rear of the plane for 3 hours than to comp him a seat because RULEZ is beyond my comprehension, even if his only intent was to scam a free upgrade. The cost of the upgrade (cost of 1st class - cost of coach) has to be less than cost of lawsuit if the plane hit an air pocket and he got thrown against the ceiling.
