Meh. I'll wait for a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range.

I like to keep this handy for close encounters.

Was always kinda confused why they called it a "pulse" rifle when it clearly fired bullets.

I know it's super cool, but I'm a little disappointed that they're shooting tracers out in the desert.

Also, if you're going to go all the way and get a registered machinegun for this, why not go ahead and get a registered under barrel grenade launcher? Or even a non-regulated under barrel flare launcher?

I love the idea, but 18lbs is pretty rough.  You're not at "shoulder-fired long arm" at that point, you're pushing "squad support weapon".  For that sort of weight, you might as well spruce up an MG42 and stick it on a modified steadicam mount.

I always assumed it was a leftover from a rewrite. As in an earlier version of the script had laser rifles called 'pulse' rifles and later they decided it would look to Star Warsy when they were going for a more authentic gritty look.  But that is just my guess.

I had assumed that "pulse" meant something akin to multiple burst fire.

Its been a long time since I've seen it, but in the movie, Aliens, those rifles never ejected spent casings. Maybe it's code for "caseless ammo", like this crazy thing uses:

Man...Germans are some brilliantly crazy people when it comes to mechanisms...this weapon sounds pretty damn awesome really.  3 round burst with zero recoil until after the 3rd round has fired.  Wacky.

The problem is the ammo.  Making a decent caseless round that's durable and safe enough to store is actually pretty hard.

The 9mm is probably a better choice for longer range shots, while you save your 3 shotgun rounds for aiming directly into the Alien's braincase as it opens its articulated double-jaw to bite you in the face. Sort of a "dodge this" last-ditch effort.

If I remember rightly they also had some trouble with the residue from caseless ammo causing jams and other failures.

The "Aliens Technical Manual" says "The M41A uses an electronic pulse action to fire, controlled directly from the trigger...  The M41A is chambered for the standard US M309 10×24mm caseless round, a 210 grain, steel-jacketed and explosive-tipped round embedded within a rectangular propellant block of Nitramine 50. Although the propellant mass is small, it is highly efficient, generating muzzle velocities of 840 meters per second."

It was so exciting when I first read about caseless technology. And then every nightmare that you guys mentioned came true. Its bad. Wonderful experiment, good idea, but the tech just doesn't appear to be there. Yet... I always wonder why you couldn't use something like an explosive gas. Hmm. Think I answered my own question... :-)

You can make your own M41A
http://www.tk560.com/m41a.html
this guy used demilitarized parts per BATF. You could however use functional parts if you really want a prison term. (Note they did make some M1A1 Thompsons that did fire 10mm to be authentic)

A Thompson and a modified SPAS-12.

Someone has built one to those exact specifications.  I know I've seen a video of it somewhere.  If it's anything like the Thompson I've held it's pretty damn heavy.
