FTA:
"A single bullet sruck the child above the eye, causing him to start bleeding and fall over."

From a .40. At close range. I feel like they're understating things a bit, but I don't suppose they could say what REALLY happened without making this more horrifying / infuriating than it already is. FFS, even with PAINTBALL, you NEVER POINT THE GUN AT SOMETHING YOU DON'T INTEND TO SHOOT. Such a shame those children had to pay the price for this complete moron's lack of a brain. I need to go hug my pregnant wife now.

This is also being discussed on a gun forum I frequent. This is not only a tragedy, it is criminal, and this guy should be charged with murder. He disregarded all of the safety rules that should be employed when handling a firearm. The boy was murdered as a result of negligence and stupidity. I hope his uncle rots in prison.

I'm pretty sure it's too late to educate him.  Well, at least for this time.  Maybe now he won't kill his niece.

What is your point? He is being charged with criminal homicide, which means he didn't mean it. I am saying he should have known better, and what he did amounts to murder. You don't point a gun at anyone you don't intend to kill, and you certainly don't pull the trigger.

Olm said that when the nephew reached out for the gun, he pulled the trigger.

Clearly he was just standing his ground.

Involuntary manslaughter.  Murder requires intent and usually premeditation.

slight threadjack:

a couple of weeks ago I was standing in a guys kitchen to do a painting side job. the homeowner was concerned about the way the wall currently looked (it looked like it was painted in an eggshell finish, but then some touch-ups were made in a not-quite-the-same-color and a satin finish. it didn't look intentional, it looked splotchy and appeared to be covering up some patched nail holes).

I told him no big deal, after fresh paint, it would all look the same finish.

he was concerned that I wasn't seeing the extent of the splotchiness. I told him that I could tell where some of it was, and that it didn't matter if I could see it or not, it would be corrected upon a new coat of paint.

he said that it depended on the lighting and that the current lighting wasn't good enough for me to fully see the existing problem.

he said, "wait a second, I'll be right back". then he left the kitchen and came back just a few seconds later carrying a handgun with a mini flashlight mounted on it.

he then turned off the kitchen light and turned the little flashlight on on the handgun and held it sideways to the wall to sweep the light over the wall. I did not know if it was loaded or not.

yes. I could see the splotchiness better.

I quoted it high so as to not get the job.

I did not trust how cavalier he was with his handgun, and how quickly he was able to retrieve it.

and the whole time he's telling me about what a fark-up his 30-year-old son is and how his son and his friends are always stealing money from him and how his son just does drugs all day and various junkies are crashing there occasionally.

no, I did not want to be in that house working.

that address will be in the news in the future.

/threadjack off

Police arrested Olm on charges of criminal homicide, recklessly endangering another person and endangering the welfare of children.

Usually such gross stupidity is deemed a "tragic accident" and everyone carries on like nothing more significant than a broken window has occurred.

The concept of the gun is always loaded is difficult for some people to master, I've noticed. I don't think it is a cognitive disorder as much as it is a sort of utilitarian-slave situation: they unloaded it, checked the chamber, locked it up. "I did these things and checked them off, therefore the end result must be true." It is sort of like they treat firearms as though they were spreadsheets or lawnmowers.

Having a gun in the home dramatically increases the odds you or a member of the household/family will be killed by that gun through negligence, homicide, or suicide.

Yet those who insist on denying this simple truth keep on telling themselves it's for defending their home or person.

How many burglars and attackers are actually stopped by having guns?

The NRA does not want that study as it would show them up for the senseless death merchants they really are.

Well regulated militia, my ass.

Now we have mouth-breather states with guns in bars and churches.

Darwin can't work quickly enough for this mindset to self-correct.

I kind of wanted to bring this up in the jack in the box thread yesterday. Even if YOURE handling the gun safely (this guy wasn't, everybody knows rule #1) some kid is gonna want to play with it, and kids just grab for shiat without thinking. I can't imagine how the family must feel.

According to a police report, the 11-year-old child was visiting the home of his grandfather. The boy allegedly asked his uncle, 34-year-old Chad Olm, who lives in the basement, to see his gun collection.

Chad then replied "okay, as soon as I am finished with this Fark post about how Trayvon was a thug". He then hit add comment, pulled his pants up from his ankles, and proceeded to show his nephew the reasons he can't afford his own place.
