Someone seems unclear on the definition of "hermit".

Become an official hermit and end up interacting with far more people than I do now? No thanks.

Sounds like they're looking for less of a hermit and more of an elder/gnome.

Geez, get your nomenclature accurate.

Ich möchte mich für diese Stelle bewerben.   The gardening part sounds like a lot of work, though.  Inform the Mayor that I will require several assistants, dressed -- for the tourists! -- in traditional Swiss milkmaid outfits.

Is the council looking to dispense ludicrously erroneous maps of secret passages in their fortresses to this hermit?

Because that is what I would do.

So, kinda like a priest?

If I'm going to be a hermit it'd be in caves in like.. Burma or Laos. Give me REAL seclusion to ponder in!

I'd think a copy of Ambrose Bierce's "The Devil's Dictionary" could work. Everyone knows acidly pithy hermits are the best kind.

Nothing wrong with being a hermit.  If there's a better way I'll learn it.  I'm Hermit McDermitt, my irregular ways confirm it.  I'm Hermit McDermitt, in my tower of ivory.  If you find me, I'll burn it, you won't see me for dust.  There's no one I trust, a Hermit I must be.

It sounds like they want their own indigenous people to parade before the tourists without the hassle of having real indigenous peoples.

Completely get it.  I love helping people, love seeing them happy but want absolutely nothing to do with them personally.

I would love to be a wisdom dispensing hermit.

They also seem a bit unclear on the meaning of "cave". Is there actually a cave? It looks to me like the hermit lives in the "hermitage" which appears to be something like a cottage.

Makh: I could totally do this.  I also love caves and minerals.  Wait, does it have internet?  Because that is a real deal breaker...Possibly.

Pretty much my thoughts.

Also, they'd probably expect me to speak European or something.  Probably even German which I can't do.  Yo hablo poquito espanol, but I'm too lazy to even look up the alt codes to use tildes or accent marks.  I'm not even sure if I should have used an accent mark in that sentence.

It would have to have internet and TV would be kind of nice too.

I'm sure after a few years I'd learn to speak their languages.  FFS, German, French and Italian are all "official" languages there.  And Romansch, too.  Four friggin' official languages according to the CIA.

Languages:

German (official) 64.9%, French (official) 22.6%, Italian (official) 8.3%, Serbo-Croatian 2.5%, Albanian 2.6%, Portuguese 3.4%, Spanish 2.2%, English 4.6%, Romansch (official) 0.5%, other 5.1%
note: German, French, Italian, and Romansch are all national and official languages; totals more than 100% because some respondents indicated more than one main principal language (2012 est.)

That was all the rave in the 1800 for English estates to have a hermit living on their grounds. They'd be paid a stipend and would even have meals provided for them. It was like a fashion accessory to have a "pet hermit".

It was not uncommon too for the hermits to quit because they found the job "too lonely".

Two thoughts:

img.fark.net

First Hermit    "Still there's one thing about being a hermit, at least you meet people".
Second Hermit    "Oh yes, I wouldn't go back to public relations."

Second thought: FTA:  the last one left because she didn't like the attention she was getting from visitors to her cave.

It's actually only a 5-10 minute bus ride from the old city in Solothurn, so you won't be that isolated. I go there quite often.
