If they were measuring from darkest to lightest, shouldn't the black kid been first?

I tell ya, public education in this country is just a joke. Can't even line up darkest to lightest right nowadays!

Why didn't they pick on the lightest kid? Gingers are easy targets too

Couldn't of been a public school. They would still be arguing over who was more light skinned-ded.

So do schools still do the "genetic traits" things like hair color, eye color, blood type, etc.?  I recall those lessons turning up rumors of kids who's mom was a slut because they couldn't have inherited their traits from their parents.  Or the ginger kid who realizes he's adopted.  Seemed like a bad idea when I was a kid and that was a long time ago.

My cousin's first baby has red hair. The mom has milky yellow toned skin and black hair. I don't think any of her relatives have red hair that she knows of, but I'm not sure. The dad (my cousin) has golden olive skin, golden brown hair. I googled because I thought it was weird, but I guess it just means at some point there were redheads in her family. The cousin has a lot of redheads on his mom's side.

Maybe next time they should separate them between blue eyes and green eyes.

Yes, educating children is a bad idea.

Isn't grade six a bit old to be doing this kind of insipid exercise?
This seems more like a first grade thing to do.

Of course I have no doubt that this was to mollify adults, not to educate the children.

I don't know what the deal with my family is. The only people I've met with coloring like my cousin and me have been from Turkey. Really golden olive skin, green eyes, golden honey-brownish curls. But then the rest of the family has either reddish skin (probably Native American) or Irish pink skin, or just normal white person beigey yellow. And the family lines are pretty boring and typical--Flannerys, Hewletts, Salisburys. That whole area of Europe.

I think I actually had a paternity test done when I was young because my mom had an exboyfriend with coloring like this (and my parents don't), and the family was hoping I was their's. Genes are weird. My family also has this one very particular face that is apparently SUPER dominant. Going back to my great great grandmother, it's creepy how there's at least one woman in each generation with this face. And somehow even though it's a tiny bit different each generation, I resemble my great great grandmother more than anyone else.

Or if the kids had been ranked by length. At some point skin color has to become just another attribute, just like hair color or length, maybe the people at that school are so not racist that they thought they could do that now.

Oh the UK.  There are places in this country the kids would have beaten that teacher to death for asking that.
Most others would have cried, screamed and protested until the teacher stopped or quit.

I don't know what the deal with my family is.

My brother got the olive skin and curls from our Portuguese Jew ancestry, I got the red hair and freckles of the Scottish part, plus the eyes and beard of the distant Cherokee.  Always wished I could have had darker skin so I could lay out in the sun more.

I really wonder if all this tolerance and diversity stuff is actually making racism and homophobia infinitely funnier to the kids.

I know when I was a kid, if I knew something was super duper forbidden, that just made it ever more enticing.

The teacher could have at least been more discreet about it, and separated the kids according to eye color. We all know that's never been done before, and it's perfectly ethical, right?

You'd think things like this are taught to people training to become educators.

When I was a junior in HS, the algebra teacher would assign seats according to grades every 6 weeks. Of course, I always sat in the last seat. I was not so much humiliated as I was pissed. Fark! Who did I have to cheat off of, the next to stupidest in the class?

There isn't anything wrong with acknowledging the fact that different people have different colored skin.  The outrage here is just another case of racist projection.
