If you're going to give me a three-sentence wire service "article", at least make the link to the actual story clickable, you f*cks.

fusillade762: CBS Los Angeles link.

School district officials in Rialto have received death threats in connection to a class assignment instructing students to debate the veracity of the Holocaust, according to reports Monday.
Rialto Unified School District officials first responded last week to reports of the assignment, which asked students to compose a written debate over whether the Holocaust was "merely a political scheme created to influence public emotion and gain."

I think I see the problem here. Student research may stumble upon white supremacist groups in the U.S. that make that claim.

TFAssignment: write an argumentative essay, based upon cited textual evidence, in which you explain whether or not you believe this was an actual event in history or merely a political scheme created to influence public emotion and gain wealth

Sounds like they left the decision on whether or not they wanted to argue if it happened up to the students. Seems like a legitimate assignment to me. Also seems like a legitimate way for the teacher to determine who the assholes in her/his classroom were.

Though in fairness, I would have tried to argue the opposition for the sake of being difficult

You know, if we let political correctness be the death of critical thinking, it does a vast disservice to those that have fought and died for free speech in this country (no matter whether that's the actual law or the social law intervening). Some folks need to be reminded that there will always be things you need to remember as a people so that the past doesn't repeat itself - they won't just go away by sweeping them out of our collective vocabulary through glares and judgmental whispers..

I think the problem here is that:

(a) they're not teaching critical thinking skills a la Lincoln-Douglas debate (which is probably thought they were doing) because L-D debates are centered on debatable issues, not historical facts; and,

(b) they're introducing, to wildly impressionable minds, the idea that the Holocaust actually didn't happen.  10 years from now all some of  these 8th graders will remember is that they were taught the Holocaust was faked and they got a B on a paper that proved it.

As a creative writing project, they should have picked a less sensitive fact to assign, such as arguing whether Jesus was real or whether the French are human.

Nope, like I said in a comment just before this one, it sounds like they were trying to teach critical thinking via Lincoln-Douglas debate; but L-D is focused on debatable issues, not historical fact.  As in: Abortion rights: pro vs con; not: Abortion, does it exist or not?

It isn't a free speech issue, children in school need to be taught a basic curriculum, that does not include making up stories about why evolution is a lie from the pit of hell either. For extra credit, you should have learned that free speech does not cover a child in school, especially public school.

You get a guy like this superintendent and whatever idiot(s) tried to back this and I feel a need to send them on a trip to Auschwitz for some desperately needed education. The only way to beat back intolerance like this is with sunlight and the truth. Better that they learn so that they can actually educate people on atrocities like the holocaust. The sad thing is that these people were ever in charge of something like this to begin with.

Sorry to keep repeating the point in my comment replies, but this genuinely is a serious incident.  Unusual for Fark.

Political correctness has nothing to do with it, and here's why:  If they wanted to teach critical thinking, they needed a debatable issue, not a fact that is known to all sane people.  So, for instance, and in keeping with their crazy topic: was the Holocaust a good idea or a bad idea?  And not: the Holocaust, did it happen?

This assignment would have done the opposite of what you suggest.  Far from reminding people of something "so that the past doesn't repeat," they'd be introducing impressionable kids the idea that the Holocaust actually didn't happen.  In ten years time, all some of these kids would remember is that they got a B on a school assignment explaining why the Holocaust was faked, and they wouldn't have gotten a B if it wasn't true.

Remember, there are still people who want to see the birth certificate.  These sort of people should not be encouraged with misguided school assignments that accidentally put an official stamp on idiot ideas.

Well known fact that Islamic countries teach that the Holocaust never happened or was overblown. The school district's interim superintendent is Mohammed Z. Islam and Rialto District spokesperson Syeda Jafri try to push an Islamic belief on US school children and, as usual, most Farkers are fine with it.

The assignment sounds kind of interesting.

2014-05-05 10:09:41 PM
The original assignment was to do some research, and citing sources, write an essay on whether the Holocaust actually occurred or not.

And the students who conclude that the Holocaust didn't happen flunk because they clearly didn't do any research or cite any credible sources. So what's the problem?

What does that have to do with anything? He didn't create the assignment or assign it, here it says it was created and assigned to all 8th grade classes by a district official, doesn't name who.

2014-05-05 10:11:28 PM
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that a denier saw the opportunity to slip this into a lesson.

We often see this pattern with all manner of crackpot theories and denial movements:  they can't get their ideas accepted in a mainstream forum, so they look for unusual ways to disseminate them.  One is to try injecting their theories into school curricula.

I bet that the post mortem on this assignment will find a denier behind it, and I wouldn't be surprised if a few similar assignments were found in other schools.
