Can we just skip the meeting and pray to the Norse god of mead? And, by pray, I mean drink all of the mead.

/ all of it

Well good. I was worried that someone, somewhere might be able to call a meeting to order without thanking God for the ability to speak.

Hey hyper-Christians: God didn't make your landscapers show up on time. God didn't spread the world about your successful garage sale. God's not going to stop your kid from throwing your phone in the toilet.

A great big ol meh.  This isn't a battle worth fighting.  While there are religious elements out there trying to suppress women and criminalize homosexuality, I don't give two shiats if someone wants to open up their meeting with a stupid little prayer.

I think it is our duty to baptize the city council in goats blood to purify them prior to the meetings.

Separation of church and state, I could swear this was somewhere in the Constitution. I even seem to recall many people leaving other countries and helping found this country over objections because /their/ religion wasn't the chosen one. Keep government out of religion and religion out of government. Dammit!

Stupid ruling.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, writing for the majority, said the prayers are ceremonial and in keeping with the nation's traditions.

So basically he's saying "It's always been done, so why change it?"

Because times change a-hole. You now have Muslims, Hindus, and other religions at these meetings, and when you pick one religion and start praying to YOUR God and your Jeebus you are instituting state sponsored religion and a policy of exclusion. Using your logic of "it's tradition", if you were on the Supreme Court in the 1860's you would rule slavery should still be around because hey, it's a tradition and has been around since the founding fathers. Why change it? White people aren't slaves so it doesn't hurt them, and Christians don't care if you pray to their Christian God so it doesn't hurt them.

We believe he was not the Son of God, but rather a good man who's love of liquor, firearms, and revenge could teach us all something in this modern day.

nekom: While there are religious elements out there trying to suppress women and criminalize homosexuality, I don't give two shiats if someone wants to open up their meeting with a stupid little prayer.

It could have consequences if the prayers serve to be politically divisive. These things are called "tradition", and while the primary intention may be to display one's religion like a Pharisee, it's a nice political bonus to drive out non-believers by making them feel uncomfortable and uninvited.  In which case I'd just move to a town that isn't more backwards than a Satanic lyric, but the SCOTUS really derped this one.

2014-05-05 11:54:42 AM
Oh and we can officially stop calling Kennedy the swing vote now. He plays for the red team.

2014-05-05 11:55:22 AM
I'm not sure why people are taking this as something Fundies won't like. They ruled that overly Christian openers are entirely legal so long as they're "inclusive" so that means they can still open by talking about zombie jesus, they just can't say that zombie jesus wants all of teh gheys shipped to an island and executed. We really need to start impeaching supreme court justices.

In 2008, after residents Susan Galloway and Linda Stephens complained, four of 12 meetings were opened by non-Christians, including a Jewish layman, a Wiccan priestess and the chairman of the local Baha'i congregation.

Meh... Go find your fauxrage somewhere else.
