I used to have a crotch-sniffing dog

/he was a pro at it, too
//didn't even need any training

It's impressive how they train these dogs. The only thing my dog is interested in sniffing is steak and other dog's buttholes.

Pick: Next week: GMO Sniffing Dogs.

I've got a special stick they can hold and it'll waggle when they approach evil GMO foods. And gluten. And toxins. And fibromyalgia triggers.

Scheu's celiac disease had caused a slew of other health disorders, like a vitamin A deficiency caused by fat malabsorption; a connective tissue disorder; hepatitis;

Wait what?

i am pretty sure gluten didn't give her hepatitis

Gluten killed my father. Terminal Crohn's Disease. But he died doing what he loved: taking a sh*t.

It can. "celiac hepatitis" is a thing, I think it's a subset of reactive hepatitis.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing gluten.

I dunno, considering all the damage it's done to her, I don't see why it wouldn't damage her liver too.

Hepatitis is the swelling of the liver, the viruses are just named for the damage they cause.

"Nope; this has gluten, too. Better let me eat it as well; wouldn't want to risk your health." *nom nom nom*

"Another?! Man, there sure is a lot of gluten these days." *nom nom nom*

If you can't eat it because you have celiac disease you have my deepest sympathy, that truly sucks. If, however, you won't eat gluten because you're jumping on the bandwagon of some fad diet backed by pseudoscience mumbo-jumbo and feel the need to let everyone in earshot know about it and expect others to cater to your new dietary restrictions, you can eat a dick.

That about clear things up?

/apparently it's impossible to go on a fad diet without becoming really annoyingly vocal and entitled about it.

while it only takes more than 10-12 parts to make Scheu ill for weeks.

My reaction was "well, that's.... fairly useful, I guess?" until I got to this line.

If her case is mild enough that it wasn't even diagnosed until she was in her 60s, it's extremely unlikely that she's anywhere near that sensitive.  It's a relatively fixed sensitivity and it's a congenital defect, so it's not like it could have suddenly gotten worse or she spontaneously "caught" it later.

If she was actually that sensitive to the protein and had gone undiagnosed, she wouldn't be a grandmother, she'd be 40+ years dead.

So... yeah, I would now suspect that the rest of TFA is dodgy pseudocience at best.  You can't tell me a blatant lie and then expect me to trust you on the rest of it.

It's the second paragraph....

There are many brands that carefully label their products. I can't afford a  dog so I just have to do my own research.

I work in the food business and it's amazing how many people, pretty much exclusively white collar white people and their housewives, cannot decide whether the gluten-free or whole wheat pizza is the healthier option for that particular day.

/obviously, no pizza at all is the only healthy choice

Jim_Callahan: If her case is mild enough that it wasn't even diagnosed until she was in her 60s

It doesn't have to be mild. CD is notoriously hard to diagnose because the symptoms are so normal seeming.

You've had a stomach ache? You feel tired for no reason? You're a lot less fat than most people? You only have one of those problems, and not the others, and only sometimes, over your entire life?

"Wow. Call the newspapers."

You may, or may not have serious nutrient deficiencies even though you're eating right, but we don't know because your blood hasn't been tested for all those things?

"Well that would be clear, if we could magically see into the bloodstream of every person on earth."

/there's no obvious case of CD
