FTA: The artist joined the show's roundtable discussion with host David Gregory, and spoke as an Obama supporter and a philanthropist.

He probably made more sense than the usual collection of talking heads on Fox News, bashing anything Obama and/or Democratic.

I'm sure they were probably just happy he wasn't Bill Kristol

I don't watch Meet the Press, so i can't really say anything about the content, but if he has something to say that is relevant to the discussion then who cares? As long as he is staying on point and not acting a fool, then let the man have his say.

On the other hand, if this was thier attempt to draw in another demograohic to the show then they really miscalculated his appeal/draw.

I don't care much for his musical stylings, but I'm sure that the pearl stud in his left earlobe has more to say about the state of political affairs than someone like Jennifer Rubin or the Doughy Pantload.

Why do heads of state meet with Bono to discuss Africa? Why is Angelina Jolie a UN Goodwill Ambassador? Neither have any post-secondary education in political studies / economics / sociology and neither has any relevant work experience, yet many consider them authorities.

I watch it fairly religiously, mostly in the background as I get ready to play golf Sunday mornings. It wasn't easy to listen to this week.

I do watch MTP most weeks, and while he stayed on point and did not act a fool, he did not bring much information or insight to the discussion.

Could have just been first time jitters. He did not seem to have much experience with that format.

Did not watch but I'm going to guess that regardless of his performance, it was no worse than any of the usual talking bobbleheads that go on there. Hell, just the fact that he isn't Bill Kristol or Cokie Roberts or even David Gregory instantly puts him in at least the middle of the pack as regards to his contributions to society vis-a-vis his appearance on Press the Meat. A high bar there set it is not.

/I prefer to maintain my brain cells on Sunday mornings, so I avoid these shows like the plague

Meet the Press is just borrowing a page from Bill Maher's playbook and mixing artists with the policy wonks in order to make the conversation more accessible to the masses.

I'd watch if they brought on Immortal Technique or KRS One.

I used to DVR that show and watch it on Sunday's after lunch sometime.  Now I still DVR it, I guess just in case something big is happening, but I've usually deleted the recording before it's finished, so meh.

Because or their expertise on certain issues that drives them to poor massive amounts of money into the causes they choose. I don't understand why some people think intelligence and being a rock star or actor are mutually exlusive. No one questions why Bill Gates being a tech/businessman also is extremely knowledgable about his causes, even before he retired to fun his foundation.

By no means am I questioning their intelligence. I'm questioning their expertise. Being a philanthropist and touring Africa does not make you an expert on third world economic policy. The same logic applies to Bill Gates (however in this case he works through a foundation that does consult experts).

And I'm not discounting Bono et.al., I'm just suggesting that they offer a laypersons perspective on these topics. Their personal fame and wealth is what gives them access to politicians and policy makers, not their viewpoint.  And, more to the point,  Will. I. Am's perspective on the White House Correspondent's Dinner is just as valid as Bono's perspective on third world debt relief: Each offer an amateur's viewpoint on their respective topics of interest.

Curious....you think they are a bunch of idiots, but clearly you watch the show, otherwise you wouldn't have such  well formed opinion on them.  Baffling to me that you would do that.  Once I arrive at the conclusion someone is an idiot, I tune them out.  Perhaps you are one of those people that like subjecting themselves to unpleasant things.   Do you hire a dominatrix by chance?

There is such a thing called hate-watching.  I think that is more for watching badly scripted Television or movies, but this may fit as well.

What's outrageous is that it was apl.de.ap who wrote the Black Eyed Peas' white paper on embassy security in the wake of Benghazi, not will.i.am! I mean, will.i.am is barely fluent in standard Arabic, much less the highly idiomatic Libyan dialect that apl.de.ap has done multi-year immersion work in.

Will.i.am's portfolio is mostly geopolitical and macroeconomic forecasting for central Asian gas and oil exports. Mofo hasn't set foot in the Middle East in years, except to change planes in Cairo. Even Taboo, who handles sub-Saharan African affairs for the group, would have been a better choice. But of course the headliner has to grab all the glory, even if he's reading from 3x5 cards that apl.de.ap had to scribble down for him.

Oh well. At least it wasn't a repeat of that disaster when Fergie gave that speech before the National Press Club on sub-demographic party affiliation dynamics in the 2010 midterms and consistently confused realignment with reapportionment.

Short answer - they had to be informed by many different experts to be able to fund the projects that they do. I think we can all agree that they didn't do that by themselves.

Having expertise comes from being informed and doing. So no, it is not layman, amateur, or even their own opinions - they were fed the details but have more than average understanding.

What they do have that is all theirs is the passion, drive, money, and access to people and places to carry out what they do.
Sure, there have been instances where a celebrity is asked to read a paper somewhere to bring attention to a cause, with no understanding of it. But not the longtimers with proof of what they accomplished.

I wish the famous would just introduce the experts. Then the right people would have name recognition. We would respect and listen closer then, not to mention get rid of the ridicule that is really not helping.

But ego.
