I can just see the ads now.

"Nothing's more METAL than an iron lung!"

"Iron Lung: Your ticket to binge-watching!"

"I NEVER have to circle the lot for a parking space. Thanks, Polio!"

"Today's Polio: Who are YOU going to listen to, some uggo egghead nerd doctor or the star of 'The Hills' and the Lucky Strike NFL Player of the Year?"

To be honest, this isn't First World Anti-vaxxers worried about autism and mercury, but religious extremists against anything the West does for them and conspiracies that the CIA is trying to sterilize Africa with polio.

One of my more paranoid worries is that a soldier returning from Afghanistan is asymptomatic but a carrier of polio and infects people here in the US.

I kinda like the idea of "You want to leave a polio country on an international flight?  Here's your polio inoculation".

Makes sense. A lot of countries have yellow fever inoculation requirements if you've been to a yellow fever area.

You know that the whole "the CIA is using polio vaccinations as a cover for espionage" one is actually true, right?

I said the CIA is trying to sterilize Africa, not use vaccination as cover for espionage.

There is a slight difference between the two, and screw the CIA for farking up yet another humanitarian outreach project and getting people killed.

Didn't something similar happen to the Red Cross in Columbia a few years back?

You had mentioned the Taliban as one of the "conspiracy theorists" above, and while I have no desire to defend the Taliban, they're right in that particular case.

The CIA also was involved with that whole "trafficking drugs from Central America and inventing crack" thing in the 80s, so I don't really blame people for believing in whatever CIA-based conspiracy theories are floating around out there.

It's nice to know their extremists and our extremists could get together and share stories about water flouridation and vaccine sterilization.

So much pseudoscience, so must mistrust. Mental retardation is a bigger epidemic than polio, and NO IT'S NOT CAUSED BY YOUR TAP WATER.

That doesn't make it better. The vaccination programs were real enough, the CIA just sneaked in with them.

Well color me surprised. Apparently having countries mired in violent conflict like Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, and a large swath of Africa ends up disrupting modern-day medical technology from preventing diseases we were able to eradicate decades ago. Due to extremists who hate the very people who intervene in their shiat and kill their families in the name of knee-jerk emotional reactions? And Red Cross/Red Crescent agencies who were used by the CIA for espionage? And Red Cross/Red Crescent workers who are too scared to show up in those areas to give aid because they might get murdered and raped? Who knew? I tell ya, I gotta plead ignorance on that.

I know a whole fark-ton of Teabaggers. I work with 15 of them. None are anti-vaxxers. They are totally loyal to the pharma corporations that produce vaccines.

Anti-vaxxers are pro-natural remedies and anti-corporation.

People, these outbreaks are in Pakistan, Syria and Cameroon, all of which are impoverished, war-torn countries. Everyone in the US has been vaccinated and we still have the occasional case. But we have nothing to worry about here. The WHO isn't concerned about us, Europe or most of Asia and South America.
