JackieRabbit: I'm still waiting for someone, anyone to give me a single example of how social media has improved his/her life. No one has been able to demonstrate that it is anything beyond than a time and mind suck.

Convenience. I don't have to keep up with hundreds of email accounts. If I need to get in touch with someone, I've got a one-stop location to do so.

There. Now someone has told you how social media has improved their life, and you don't have to make that comment ever again. Which, if you think about it, means that social media has now improved your life as well.

It makes me feel great about myself when I see the grammar and spelling that most people use. It's a drug free anti-depressant.

The problem with the damn telephone is that people are going to start talking to their neighbors over a wire, instead of face-to-face.  This will lead to greater deceit.

Wangiss: Email is a social medium, you twat.

hmmm no..

email is direct communication...electronic letters with attachments.

Social media is posting for public view or multiple people, done via websites.

You can have "private" chats or messages via those sites, but it's not email.

Social media is about "feedback", for a large audience.

I use Goodreads to see what books my friends have rated highly, so i can look them up to possibly get. Yes I can ask them, but this way i can see what they liked 10-15+ years ago stuff they may have forgotten.  And i know Goodreads ahsnt been around that long, but it allows you to enter your entire library and rate it as you go along, as well as review books.

That being said, that is the only social media i use.  Not very attention whorish.

That comment received 3 legitimate answers.

I'm certain that poster will ask that same question in future threads related to social media though.

It all comes down to...

If I want to I can check in with my distant relatives and and see how they are doing and know whats new with them.  If I don't want to, I don't have to.  That's pretty nice.

Use a technology if it improves your life and lets you connect with people. If not, then skip it. Different strokes for different folks.

But that's not good enough for some people, gotta have a race to the bottom for assholery and pretentiousness between pro- and anti-social media types.
