I had to find the damn badge. A little surprised I still had it, though it had to be updated a bit (age has a way of sneaking up on you).

Really looking forward to the well-timed terrorist events, tight deadlines, implausible plot twists, and mysterious commercial-length intervals where everybody at CTU apparently stops what they're doing.

In preparation I recently watched (well, "watched;" I turned it on while I was at my workbench) seasons 5-8. Season one was by FAR the strongest. There were some really crappy bits through the last 4 seasons; let's see if Jack can kick it up a notch.

Based on the promos, I'm pretty sure Chloe's the vampire, not Jack.

are they going to use the same stupid lingo?  I know over time the lingo that law enforcement agencies use changes - there is a certain trendiness as certain lingo fades in and out of style.  Its been four years.  Now that I believe the lingo they used originally was accurate.  Maybe they just figured out what agencies actually say and use that.  And of course what the brits say and what americans say will be different.

Or is it just gonna be a bunch of perimeters and visuals and schematics?

Fox ran a 30-minute preview last week.

'24: Live Another Day' preview: Go behind the scenes with 'Jack is Back'

apparently the story involves drones, uber-surveillance, elements of Snowden and WikiLeaks...

and it's always good to see Michael Wincott.

don't know what to make yet of Chloe with the Dragon Tattoo.

Yeah, I liked the show, but the adherence to the "real time" format got annoying after the novelty wore off.  They should have just spun it into a regular weekly show set in the same universe, but not bound by the time constraints.  I'm sure there are good stories to tell with those characters that take more than a day to unfold.

Oh baby, this is gonna be so AWESOME! Can't wait! And of course, I get called into a last minute meeting that I absolutely cannot avoid at what time? Oh yes. Same time as 24. Sigh. We were so close. Anyway. Can't wait to see all the old 24 Farkers coming around again. I am totally gonna SET UP A PERIMETER around you.

it is during the commercial breaks that they travel.  for example, the CTU agents can get from end of LA to the other in 3.5 minutes.

Of the CTU agents introduced throughout this season, will more or less than 50% of them turn out to be moles working for the bad guys?

In some respects, it's a reasonable thing to say. Torture never failed to solve the day when Jack Bauer was involved, and Fox News sure noticed.
After playing a clip from 24, in which [Jack] Bauer defends his use of torture in front of Congress, [Glenn] Beck said: "When I first saw that, I thought, 'Gee, I think I've seen that before.' But it's been a long time since I've seen honor like that." He then played congressional testimony from former U.S. Marine Oliver North and asked: "Where is that honor today?" [Fox News' Glenn Beck, 4/22/09]

On the September 13, 2006, edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, Fox News contributor Laura Ingraham stated, "The average American out there loves the show 24. OK? They love Jack Bauer. They love 24. In my mind, that's as close to a national referendum that it's OK to use tough tactics against high-level Al Qaeda operatives as we're going to get. OK?"

I don't care what anyone on Fox News says about a Fox show. There was government sanctioned torture exactly once on the show and they had the wrong guy. The Chinese tortured Jack and it didn't work. Jack himself tortures people about the same as Charles Bronson or the guy from Taken or any "hard boiled" cop in the movies. And it doesn't work all the time. They just single out 24 because it was timely and some talking heads on Fox News mentioned it.

It also (seemed to me) that they showed how badly it affected Jack when he went to those extremes. I'm about as not-right-wing as they get & I saw it as "look how awful torture is" as opposed to "look how awesome torture is!" They also didn't seem to hesitate having the baddies torture Jack. I mean, I know it's all about perspective, but calling it "torture porn" is really not helpful to anyone.

I never watched the later seasons, and I do understand that their use of torture became more nuanced as time went on, so take these comments exactly for what they're worth.

The problem that I had with the use of torture in the seasons that I watched was the tacit assumption that torture was an acceptable technique. Beyond that, though, I think that the series, by its very format, feeds into the notion that ticking time bomb scenarios are realistic and common and I think that this is where the show has had a bad impact on the debate. Mind you, I don't blame the show for the fact that people confuse fiction for reality, but it it is a point of concern.

I have also heard that while the bad guys do torture, there is a perverse kind of inference that torture works against bad guys but not good guys. Again, I don't know if that's really a valid complaint over the run of the entire show, but it was something that I noticed for the few seasons that I watched.

Well, I don't know where you dropped off in the show, not that it would've mattered a whole lot anyway because it's been so long, I probably don't remember which specific incidents were in which seasons. But it seemed to me that torture was approached as a "last resort" sort of thing (because, you know, they were RUNNING OUT OF TIME). I just didn't get the feeling that anyone was endorsing it or acting like it wasn't a big deal. And you're dead right that the show can't be blamed because people can't figure out that 24 is fiction.

I don't remember that being a thing, either. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. And more than once, Jack tortured the wrong dude and he paid for that psychologically. And when the tables were turned on him, he technically kind of died (spoiler alert?). So I don't think the show is sugarcoating it or endorsing it. It's just a thing that happens in their timeline. Which is fictional. In the future.

Also, is it weird that we're using a fictional story as a gateway to debate torture? I really don't want the show discussions to turn into politics.

I think I may give this a shot.  Watched every episode of 24 back in the day.  The final seasons were disappointing as hell, especially the finale.

I'm thinking this season is a one-off to allow them to do stuff they couldn't do in previous seasons, like killing off Jack, Jack becoming a true bad guy (not just a rogue agent fighting for good).  Hopefully they have some fun with this, and its not just a repeat of the same of stuff- which got a bit tired IMHO.

I don't think they're going to do anything to eliminate the possibility of more seasons.

I always thought that during the original run, but like I said I *think* this may be a one-off thing.

Also don't forget you can always do prequels for the cash!

We'll see- I'm not speaking from any sorta inside knowledge.
