Welcome to the "Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey" discussion thread and drinking game!

Episode 9: The Lost Worlds Of Planet Earth
World-renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and the Ship of the Imagination are on a journey through space and time to grasp how the autobiography of the Earth was written.

Tonight's rules:

Neil says:

Billion(s) - big sip
Billions and billions - finish your drink
Geology(ist) - sip
Earth - sip
Ocean - sip

Why? Virtually every scientific hypothetical I was ever presented with starts with the word imagine. Without imagination half of these things would not have been discovered. It's a perfectly apt term, considering that what is being explored from the ship cannot be explored physically.

Einstein's theory of General Relativity was hatched from a thought experiment, for example.

Yeah, I guess; at first glance, imagination implies fiction but in truth they're only theorizing anyway.

And that whole 'imagination is more important than knowledge' thing.

But it changes the matter (no pun) entirely between fact and theory.

Adolf Oliver Nipples: phillydrifter: Neil deGrasse Tyson and the Ship of the Imagination

"the ship of 'imagination'" has got to be the stupidest possible name ever in the history of stupidest possible names for a science and fact-based tv show.

/fact

Why? Virtually every scientific hypothetical I was ever presented with starts with the word imagine. Without imagination half of these things would not have been discovered. It's a perfectly apt term, considering that what is being explored from the ship cannot be explored physically.

Look, he said to his imagination, if this is how you're going to behave, I shan't bring you again.

Then his church must suck, because my pastor just gave a sermon this morning about how God doesn't cause natural disasters.

"And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.  And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entrance of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said: 'What doest thou here, Elijah?'  "

THIS IS WHAT CRAZY PEOPLE ACTUALLY BELIEVE

You do understand that even the most evil of oil companies realize that oil is getting harder and harder to find, right? You also understand that solar power requires collection equipment that wears out, right? If there were a way to make money selling solar they'd sell their mothers into slavery to do it.

You are free to adopt solar on your own hook. Tell me how long it takes you to amortize the costs of going completely off the grid. I think you'll find that it's quite a bit more costly than you imagine it to be.

See, that's what I'm talking about. Rather than some made-up silly reason, why not say that it would substantially increase the cost of living, which when applied uniformly would be extraordinarily cost-prohibitive and resource draining. You would trade one devil for another.

And that's fine, I also think we ought to exploit solar power to the best of our ability (along with other alternative energy sources), but it certainly will not be the panacea you seem to think it will be. There ain't no such thing as a free lunch, something Neil deGrasse Tyson certainly knows and you should know.

Well, it's difficult to make predictions, especially about the future, but here are some quotes from the original Cosmos:

And our small planet at this moment, here we face a critical branch point in history, what we do with our world, right now, will propagate down through the centuries and powerfully affect the destiny of our descendants, it is well within our power to destroy our civilization and perhaps our species as well. If we capitulate to superstition or greed or stupidity we could plunge our world into a time of darkness deeper than the time between the collapse of classical civilization and the Italian Renaissance. But we are also capable of using our compassion and our intelligence, our technology and our wealth to make an abundant and meaningful life for every inhabitant of this planet.

Our global civilisation is clearly on the edge of failure and the most important task it faces, preserving the lives and well-being of its citizens and the future habitability of the planet. But if we're willing to live with the growing likelihood of nuclear war shouldn't we also been willing to explore vigorously every possible means to prevent nuclear war

SquiggsIN: Adolf Oliver Nipples: SquiggsIN: which is why every home doesn't have solar panels.... no grid required = no centralized profit source via government-mandated utility monopoly

Do you realize that you're arguing against something I NEVER SAID?

I am arguing against precisely what you said. You're dragging out conspiracy theory nonsense about how the oil companies are preventing solar power proliferation by eating patents and the government is tacitly approving of this to maintain a power delivery monopoly. That is exactly what you are saying. I'm saying you're full of shiat and explaining exactly why the conspiracy theory nonsense is exactly that.

I'm a realist with no money at all. The reality is that what we have right now is ruinous but affordable. What you want will be ruinous because it will be unaffordable. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

SquiggsIN: you're pissed because I called you out for parroting "solar isn't yet efficient enough for our needs" and that's okay. Enough solar energy hits this planet daily to satisfy our needs for a thousand years. We're not using it because the fossil fuel industry has bought the influence to keep themselves in power. There's no conspiracy at hand about this.

That is total, utter conspiracy theory nonsense. What patents? Which oil companies? Are they the same oil companies that suppressed the thermodynamically impossible 200-MPG carburetor?

Additionally, it doesn't matter if the power is there to be harnessed if you can't harness it. Which costs money. And eats resources. Lots and lots of both. Which you can do right now as your pocketbook allows, alleged patents be damned.

Your afraid you will have to give something up, afraid without even knowing if it is true or not.

You are so afraid of a momentary surrender of control you cannot even  consider change.

I'm not even remotely afraid of change. I have nothing to lose. If they hand me a bill that I can't pay I'll laugh right in their faces. But I'm not at issue. There are other people to consider. other issues to address. For instance: would you accept a lower standard of living? That's what it would take. Would you accept the total exploitation of rare earth elements? That's what it would take. Would you be willing to accept rolling blackouts, lack of transportation, retreat to largely rural lifestyles? That's what it would take. How about the vast acreage of land it would take to lay out the solar farms required?

Let's say we combine that with nuclear power, a political football to say the least. How long will suitable nuclear material hold out? Just as we have Peak Oil, we face Peak Uranium. Wind farms? Only where the wind blows with regularity.

The bottom line is this: alternative forms of energy remain alternative because they cannot deliver the same volume, consistency, or transportability as fossil fuels. In our mobile society they will remain alternatives, supplements to fossil fuels, until such time as we change our lifestyles, something humans have proven unwilling to do. Everybody wants to live the dream, escape their rural, agrarian, impoverished life. Nobody wants to go back to it, and that is largely what it would take for alternative energy to completely supplant fossil fuels, and even then it would not prevent the rape of natural resources because we need them to harness it.

Like I said, damned if you do, damned if you don't. Let's do it.

To be fair, that sort of thing DOES happen, particularly to stations that aren't O&Os (for example in Atlanta, Fox 5 -is- an O&O, that is Fox actually owns and runs the station directly, it's not just an affiliate so you tend not to have sync issues)

IronTom: I think the original Cosmos had a Hall of Extinction.  But back then they were predicting global cooling and that we would run out of fossil fuels, not that we'd have so much that we could possibly affect the weather.

Actually, global cooling was never a popular idea.  Even when it was at its peak of currency, global cooling never had the same kind of scientific credibility that global warming had.

And, in the original Cosmos, Carl Sagan actually talked about the dangers to the Earth of a runaway greenhouse effect of the kind that's responsible for the temperatures on Venus: "we've uncovered other worlds with choking atmospheres and deadly surfaces.  Shall we, then, recreate these hells on Earth?  We are releasing vast quantities of carbon dioxide, increasing the greenhouse effect.  The Earth need not resemble Venus very closely for it to become barren and lifeless.  It may not take much to destabilize the Earth's climate, to convert this heaven -- our only home in the Cosmos -- into a kind of hell.  The study of the global climate and the sun's influence, the comparison of the Earth to other worlds -- these are subjects in their earliest stage of development.  They are funded poorly and grudgingly.  And, meanwhile, we continue to load the Earth's atmosphere with materials, about whose long term influence we are almost entirely ignorant."

I wasn't taking sides in this argument before this point, and I don't really want to take sides now, but this is a stupid misstep.  You certainly can research solar power, which does exist already, and even if it didn't there would still be things like feasibility studies.  We don't, for example, have working fusion power plants yet, but we're making strides towards getting them.  It's certainly possible to research fusion power plants to learn how close we are, what the advantages and disadvantages might be, how cost-effective and efficient they might be, etc.

I'm not trying to insult you or make the claim that you ARE stupid ---- merely that you SAID something stupid.

I like how in every show so far, there has been a theme of established consensus of the time being proven incorrect by pioneering individuals with the courage to speak out, backed by research and data.

Yet despite how consistent and prevalent that theme is, academia and fanbois who brainlessly parrot the consensus fight vigorously and unquestioningly against new theory.
