Whew, good things those corporate profits were protected by the government.

Ive often wondered why you can't just grow your own tobacco.

Id love to learn how to make cavendish pipe tobacco. Pipe tobacco, unlike cigarettes, actually smells really good.

Mix that with a bit of perique-cured tobacco, and i'd imagine it would smell really goid.

Growing tobacco in Australia has been illegal since 2006.

If by "new hotness" you mean 2006 "new" then yeah, it's new.  Good jorb.

I'd grow it just because it's a neat looking plant, I think. I don't need it for tobacco. But then out west, nobody would know what the hell it was anyway If I did grew one in my living room. I could say it's a banana tree or a philodendron and people would believe it.

Apparently all of them

There are some people in the US who grow tobacco as amateur operations and for their own consumption.  Check around some of the pipesmoking forums for more information.

It should (almost) never be illegal to grow a plant on your own property for your own use. Not cannabis, not opium poppies, not mescal cactus and certainly not tobacco.

That said, running an illegal tobacco production company is kinda shady. Still, it's asinine that Australia makes it illegal to grow and produce tobacco in-country.

People like drugs, just let them have their farking drugs.

/the "almost" is for nasty invasive plants - there is a valid case for restricting them

This is Australia we're talking about, a country that has suffered massive population losses and extinctions because of common European and Asian animals that stowed away on ships and airplanes.

It is illegal so they effectively tax it. At this amount of tobacco though, they are an underground business operation, hence the investigation into mob ties.

I love the reasoning for a Tobacco growing ban given by the Australian government...

"You can't grow that it's illegal!"

Why?

"It's an illegal dru..... oh wait no it isn't... umm it's REALLY REALLY bad for you.... oh wait we should make it fully illegal then... umm. Yeah it's because we spend all those tobacco taxes on nice stuff for you! You should feel good for contributing so much to our community.. umm yeah we pretty much ban it from all indoor places and in your car.. and pretty much treat you like lepers. So umm yeah don't grow your own it's bad for the country.. or something."

So basically you're upset someone is muscling in on your Drug profits then?

"umm...."

Good. For a public health standpoint, Tobacco is far more costly and dangerous than other plants that are typically smoked.

I doubt that it's legal to grow tobacco and sell it without paying excise and other taxes in the US. Just as it's illegal to distill spirits. It's partly about government getting its cut, and partly about assuring a safe product. And, in this case, it's also about trying to tax a really farkin' stupid habit out of existence.

/Yes, that's right. Fark you smokers. You quite litterally make me sick.

Not paying taxes on it is.

THIS MORNING AUTHORITIES RAIDED MCDONALDS AND REMOVED ALL MEAT PRODUCTS, CHEESE PRODUCTS, AND SAUCELIKE PRODUCTS. THEY ALSO RAIDED NORM JOESIXPACK'S HOME ON AN ANONYMOUS TIP THAT HE WAS SERVING PARTY PIZZA TO SO-CALLED "FRIENDS" (CHOLESTEROL PEDDLERS), ARRESTING SIX IN THE PROCESS.

"OBESITY KILLS MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE, AND DAMN, FATTIES TAKE A HELLA LONG TIME TO DIE" said the police public health liason.

/yeah. ESO servers are down and I got time to kill on a day off.

You actually play ESO?

I'd like to grow tobacco so I can harvest the flowering tops.  Not sure what I'd do with the rest of the plant, though.

RockofAges: Oh look, another dainty soul. Let me get you a fainting couch for your assmar.

You sound smelly. Let me get you a liter - oh wait, you are one. Spent all the money on lung cancer?
