What can be said with certainty is that trouble began ahead of a football match between the home side, Chornomorets Odessa, and the visitors, Metalist Kharkiv.

Glad too see those "pro-Russian protestors" with body armor, Russian military rifles and equpment find that it's really hard to escape fire when you're trying to illegally annex a country for your Putin.

I've been reading user comments on a lot of major western news sites regarding Ukraine. CNN, Rueters, BBC ect. I've noticed a pattern of very pro Russian posts made in broken English on all of them. For example a pro Russian post from a guy named "SanfranDav" who repeatedly uses the word "petrol". Nobody in California uses that word.

I guess it could be a fluke, but then again if it's not I would like to congratulate Putin on his trolling skills.

I forget where I read it but a news article was saying that Ukraine was heading towards a "civil war". Does it count as a civil war if the guys that the Ukrainians are fighting against are actually Russian special forces?

/Because I'm sure there are plenty of militias with armed with SAMs out there.

Yeah. Obama has really done a shiatty job of running the Ukraine. I'll never vote for him again.

He's done an outstanding job of destroying America's credibility and influence in the world by projecting his total wussiness in foreign policy. His incompetence has cost lives, and may end up starting the next world war in Europe because he simply will not be assertive.

So what happens now? Do we send the Ukraine weapons? Do we put troops on the ground?

Quietly inform the Russian government that if they don't stop farking with Ukraine, we'll start arming Chechens, Siberian separatists, etc. and let them turn Moscow into one big Kabul....

Difficult to tell, but I did notice a few months back that a lot of pro-Russians were on Youtube; they often reply a few times and then you never see them again. Considering Putin's penchant for KGB tactics, I wouldn't be surprised to find there are whole buildings full of people working the propaganda machine.

Why the hell am I going to listen to some community organizer/domestic terrorist who's been dead for 300 years?

So, let me get this straight. A bunch of people decide to attack another bunch of people with the intent of inflicting grievous harm or killing them, and then people get all teary-eyed when said attackers wind up getting the tables turned on them and are killed by the people they were trying to kill? I really don't see what's wrong with that.

From what I've read, the short version: pro-Russians and pro-Ukrainians collided, and things got out of hand.

Longer version: "ultras" from 2 different soccer teams wanted to meet in the city, to voice their support for Ukraine. A third group (possibly Russian) got in the way, and things escalated.
From what I can gather from the web (Google Translate), pro-Ukrainians are insisting that all of these situations are instigated by Russian provocateurs, sometimes dressed as pro-Maydan supporters.

2014-05-04 12:15:20 PM
The jig is almost up. Ukraine isn't going to roll over like Putin thought. Poland is itching for Russia to openly invade so they can rush to Ukraine's aid. The Baltics have said they would follow. Moldavia will probably join in. Russia goes into any of those countries, the rest of NATO will join in.

Splitters in Ukraine aren't anywhere near a majority in any area. If they were the eastern area would be in flames rather than just small spurts of trouble being solved by football hooligans.

Problem is if Putin backs down he is going to lose a lot of support at home. If he doesn't back down he will probably end up losing a lot of territory-- Chechnya and Kaliningrad come to mind. Kaliningrad is indefensible. I see a lot of payback coming from some very pissed off countries. I doubt we'd have to do more than shove weapons and ammo into their hands.

If these are Russian Special forces they seem to be quite incompetent. If a bunch of amateurs can trap them in a building and kill them.

I generally respect your insights in space threads but I gotta be frank, you're out of your element here, Donnie.

I'm a self-admitted imperialist in terms of foreign policy, and I gotta say we're playing Ukraine exactly like we should so far, given: A) Western Europe's timidity on the matter B) Ukraine internally doesn't even know what they want (we'll see what happens in the week following the May 25th election) and C) while a very easy short term win for Russia (Crimea's annexation) the long term gambit is ultimately a loss for them. Never interrupt your adversary when they're making a mistake.
