Was the soup still in the bowl?  Did he complain there was a fly in his soup?

I'm glad it was just a lousy soup bowl.  Anything of more actual or sentimental value, and there'd be a sappy tag, and something about how dusty it is at the bottom of the ocean.

Raphelson quickly went to the wheelhouse and suggested the captain abandon ship before it took another torpedo hit; he, the captain and another sailor were the last to leave on a lifeboat.

I love Grandpa stories. I'm surprised he didn't have to kill a shark with his bare hands. My grandpa would have.

"Oh, boy! A dish out of the ocean from my old ship," he said as the gift was unwrapped. "Where's my soup?"

Good old Berent's soup. With nature's added store of powerful barbiturates and heroin!

Great journalism there. There's nothing in the article about who the divers were working with/for. Poking around online, it seems one of the divers is a lawyer who organized the wreck diving himself. Hopefully they didn't take much off the wreck of the merchant ship; there's a very narrow grey area between salvaging and looting. And this is the same dive team that found the U-550; taking anything off a sunken military vessel is illegal under international maritime law, but that doesn't stop people from swiping things.

It's a little hard to tell if the old guy o's being sincere, or sarcastic with a straight face. I like to think it was the latter.

Let's hear it for the Mercant Marine! Hip, hip, and a half.

Targets don't get to have medals for risking their lives.

That's the Navy Rules and we stand behind them because it's dangerous to stand in front of them.

Still, it was thoughtful to give him the bowl. And it might fetch a good price on e-Bay as war memorabilia.

I was annoyed that they didn't explain why U-550 crew members were rescued along with the Merchant Marine crew.

Did the U-550 flounder and sink? Or was it sunk by a Navy ship in the area?
