Even if you don't believe in science, science believes in you.

The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves: Even if you don't believe in science, science believes in you.

Science is a systemic approach to verifying facts.
It believes in nothing, by definition.

/If you believe in science, you are ignoring the most important lesson of science.

God created science because reasons.

I usually find headline applause to be a bit too readily handed out. Like standing ovations in small town theaters. If you give every show a standing ovation it means nothing.

But this headline is deserving of some effusive praise.

Effective repetition, multiple layered meanings, memetic play, brevity. Very well done subby.

So the takeaway from the article is that the principle of cognitive dissonance only explains your belief system if you are a "hierarchical individualist"?

/way south is correct
/"belief" in science is a widely held position
/and not really an appropriate one for the subject

SevenizGud: The reason people don't believe science is because "scientists" will say things like:

This is accelerating global warming:

You do realize that attempting to use this particular discussion to advance your own personal views makes you the butt of your own joke, don't you?

I don't believe there are any neuroscientists appearing in the article.

Chris Mooney is an English Major.
Annalee Newitz is PhD, English and American studies.
Leon Festinger was a social psychologist.
Arthur Lupia is a political scientist
Charles Taber a political scientist
Jonathan Haidt a social psychologist
Dan Kahan is a JD (and professor of psychology)
Brendan Nyhan and Jason Reifler are political scientists
Monica Prasad is a sociologist
Jon Krosnick is a social psychologist
Milton Lodge is a political scientist (and a cute B&B)
Anthony Leiserowitz is an Environmental Scientist
John Jost is a psychologist

Anyway, there are no neuroscientists that I can find participating in this article.

Ohh, very good! The guy who this article was ACTUALLY WRITTEN ABOUT shows up to show us how the problem manifests itself.

Just remember: cognitive biases and motivated processing of information are things that happen to other people. YOU are a paragon of objective Reason. The epistemologists of the Enlightenment, on their best day, wished they were as rational as you.

The 1930s called. They want their broke-down discredited philosophy of science back.

In a classic 1979 experiment (PDF), pro- and anti-death penalty advocates were exposed to descriptions of two fake scientific studies: one supporting and one undermining the notion that capital punishment deters violent crime and, in particular, murder. They were also shown detailed methodological critiques of the fake studies-and in a scientific sense, neither study was stronger than the other. Yet in each case, advocates more heavily criticized the study whose conclusions disagreed with their own, while describing the study that was more ideologically congenial as more "convincing."

I'm curious as to the fake science they would muster to support or disprove a non-scientific argument. People are quick to turn to science to argue philosophical topics and vice versa.

when you consider that for the past ~2000 years, not believing in religion would get you locked up, cast out of society, or killed (thereby hindering your ability to reproduce) I can see this.

"Consider a person who has heard about a scientific discovery that deeply challenges her belief in divine creation-a new hominid, say, that confirms our evolutionary origins. "

what does one thing have to do with science?
So deluded people who believe in ghosts and magic dont believe in science.
YAWN
nothing new here

/Can we stop giving creationists access to modern medicine? Seriously.

Destructor: Science discovers arrogance. That's nice. Now, do not try to convince me otherwise. :-)

Arrogance, hubris, ignorance, bad logic, delusion.

Delusion would be when the facts and truth of the world contradict your beliefs, and refuse to modify your beliefs of the world.

What do you call someone who is 30 and still believes in Santa or the Easter Bunny? Deluded.
Jesus and god? Deluded.

/brainwashing is a terrible, terrible, terrible thing.

Science lies so they can get more money from the gub'mnt so they can keep on doing more science. If you need proof, just look at global warming.

Ahh! But mere delusion is easily cured with reason/logic/science! IMHO, arrogance is the real dragon here. Delusion is a passing fancy. "I thought I saw a red car"... You can play back the tape, and show them it was green. Cured.

Arrogance is a problem. It's the irrational belief that your opinion is superior... And all your antagonizer is trying to do is compete for the precious resource of being correct/superior.

You can't travel a single thread away on any message board without seeing some evidence of arrogance. Or look at both political parties battling it out right now, bringing their approval ratings to all time lows. Honestly, what value is there in defending an opinion? They're not based on fact. It's just some sort of weird intuitive idea unsupported by anything. But some people will go to their graves defending them (I suppose that would be crossing the thin line between arrogance and hubris).

Religion is sort of like this, but the motivation is different. It's more fear based (fear of dying). Any creature that spent a billion+ years evolving is likely to have a problem with that if they can grasp the concept. I know I do (and I'm an atheist).

Now re-reading to make sure I covered all the basis, you do bring an excellent point. Adults that believe in Santa/Easter Bunny. I got nothin' there. Sweet, but mentally broken? Or they know better, and refuse to 'fess up (arrogant).  Impaired reasoning, maybe. Hmm. Food for thought... ;-)
