Without reading the article, I'm going to guess that the "hacking" consisted of typing in a password that was written on a post-it note pasted to the terminal.

You were close, but you wouldn't know it from the linked article. He physically broke into the principal's office and used the principal's computer to change grades. No indication of how he got the password, or if there even was one.
