List FAILS without Jack in the Box!

That was a surprisingly good list. The "gourmet" NY one needs to be delisted, though.

I just wanted to let everybody involved with submitting this and greenlighting it that I hate them a little. Mainly because it's impossible to get a good taco here.

Stupid Canada needs to let more Mexicans in.

Go to a local meximegamart. They have a food counter...point and grunt (which isn't needed as they always speak english in America).

Get tacos. some rice and beans. Enjoy.

At the places here...the tacos are served with just the meat bit and the taco---you get to decorate it yourself from a 'salad bar' arrangement...with lettuce, green onions, tomato, cilantro, lime wedges, sour cream (very optional in squeeze bottles) and mexican cheese.

It's rather expensive about 3.00 dollars a taco--but a cut above most resturants. (tho you don't get endless chips and salsa with the meal).

2 for a buck! Yeah yeah yeah, not an "authentic" taco. But still good when you're broke.

I'm sure we'll be happy to let Canada pay to build an express highway, with no exits and plenty of gas stations, from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. We'll even let you hire American construction companies to do the actual work.

Our local fishwrap asked readers where the best tacos in the Portland area were and people chose this place:

media-cdn.tripadvisor.com

Which is right down the street from me. Problem is, I went there once and the food we got was cold and they charged us for chips and salsa. Outside of fast food Mexican places I have NEVER been charged for chips.

For a good al pastor 2 minutes from my house like my sister in law in Cancun? I'd probably get on board with that.

What, something wrong with Old El Paso taco shells out of a box and grilling your own hamburger???

/Stupid Canada is right - we're not known for our cuisine

I don't really understand it. I'm not sure I can think of an otherwise common cuisine type that's harder to find in Canada than Mexican. Maybe it's the Old El Paso effect - people think (like I did as a kid) that those are actually tacos. There have been three or four attempts at halfway authentic Mexican restaurants (varying degrees of success) in Waterloo in the last few years, and each time I've eaten at one of them they've been nearly empty. Without exception, they've failed.

Thank god I married into a Mexican family and learned what I was missing.

I had some really nice fish tacos up in Whitefish, Montana, of all places. Maybe not top 50 in the country, but there isn't much choice in Whitefish.

Tripas tacos from market square in San Antonio should have made the list.

The beef tongue taco from Tampa's Taco Bus are great when they actually manage to get an order right, unfortunately this is a rarity and they are some rude assholes so we go elsewhere now.

Going back and forth between San Francisco and Chicago (and having grown up in Texas), I was about to lose my shiat over how many east-coast and Chicago taco places were making the list.

But then La Taqueria makes the top, and maybe these guys know a thing or two.

I still feel like some awesome taco joints and epic street tacos from socal are missing, as well as a few treats in SF, but it's not a bad list.  Having been to a number of those places, the sparse relative ranking is pretty good.

Not one from AZ? Fail.

The best taco is a NAVAJO Taco
topthisplace.com

from a place like this.

i.cdn.travel.cnn.com

Just like a regular taco, except big as the plate, and instead of taco shell, it's FRY BREAD.
you grab the sides and eat it like a taco... if you can. Some of them are so filled, you have to eat em with a fork.

I love how you're pretty much hosed for 'authentic' tacos if you don't live in the southern half of the country right around the Mexican border... Yeah there's a Walla Walla, WA one listed on there, but I'm not driving across the freaking state for a vegetarian anything.

There are a few food truck places around where I live that are Mexican-based, but I have no clue how good they are. Also a few restaurants that seem to be on the level about authenticity, but also have no clue on their quality...

2014-05-04 05:33:19 AM
I heard Mexican food was garbage outside of the Southwest, Texas, and California so this list surprised me. Atlanta most of all since my buddy from Georgia said Mexican food out there is a joke.

I just love it when some one on Fark complains he can't find authenticate Mexican food. There's no such thing. Each region of Mexico is different and have different tastes. You mentioned the border states are the place for good tacos. Guess what? None of them prepare them the same way. With Mexicans everywhere in the USA your never far from good tacos

Like most foods, the best taco is the one you make yourself, at home. It's not like the ingredients are unobtainium. We're talking things poor mexicans can afford.

That being said, I've been looking for a good pork recipe for awhile, now.

This list had too many "whiny foodie" entries...but good that Chico's Tacos in El Paso made list.

But, for sure, most Whiny Foodies would never step foot in a Chicos Tacos. Great food, but the La Raza anti-gringo attitude of some of the staff would shatter all the diversity myths held by a White Guilt Whiny Foodie....

However, folks used to it are rewarded with the best Mexican food...and its not that insuferable wussy vegan foodie crap

If you look at the street addresses of the two Atlanta places you'll notice they are both in the same spot off Buford Hwy. That road basically IS Mexico.

Missing from the list: The tacos I made last night.  Been playing around with spice combinations and finally hit it.

I know right?

Half the places on the list are in Austin.

Chicago area has some great authentic places too that aren't on the list.

Jaliscos in Aurora comes to mind.

A "taco" place in New York City made no. 2?  It's probably a Puerto Rican guy stuffing caviar into a hard shell, covering it with Velveeta shavings and charging East Coast hipsters 10 bucks a pop.

Since I moved from LA area, I miss going to the below local chain, although LA has so many excellent local taquerias (including the roach trucks), it really doesn't matter that much where one goes.

I don't understand how they could leave out the most successful chain of taquerias founded by a white guy?

its a "thing" here. I think the city of austin is fueled by beer and our love for Tacos. We love our breakfast (and non breakfast) tacos to the point that, well, people take advantage of a need and now we have a billion-and-one taco places/trucks here.

I find the "hole in the wall" taco places are the best, but, Matt's El Ranchero is decent.
