I think an 18-foot shrimp would be a called a large.

Because it has a long, flat rostrum which is great for locating prey but an impediment when biting them.

Tough call in a way.

If it goes extinct anyways, is it better we know more about it than not?

What if learning more allows us to prevent extinction?

Goblin sharks are not listed as a globally endangered species. They have healthy population numbers and aren't threatened with extinction. What is rare is an 18ft goblin shark (they typically grow only to 7ft); this would be only the second or third huge goblin shark ever seen and puts the species in the category of a deep sea apex predator.

Keeping it might have given researchers a clue to shark aging but overall it's probably better for the species to keep its most successful members alive and breeding. More big sharks in the ocean is a good thing.
