OK, so who knows how to make the perfect mint julep? Every year I try, and end up with something that tastes like bourbon filtered through a wad of gum.

Derby Day already?

Darling, we must be off, if we are to have our juleps and Derby Pie prepared in time for the festivities!

Fill a small glass with 1 oz simple syrup (heat up equal parts sugar and water), a mint sprig (muddle that), ice all the way up and 2 oz bourbon, in that order. Don't use that horse piss they call whiskey, use real actual bourbon. I like Four Roses.

I live 1/2 mile from Churchill Downs and can't go today. Farking boooooo!

Yeah, those horses are treated like pampered rock stars, but please don't let that stop your poutrage.

They are indeed pampered, but to be fair, the racing circuit is far more dangerous to them than a more 'normal' lifestyle (imo), and even if they escape any serious injury, I doubt the hard running has no impact on their total lifespan.

I get your point. That said, I grew up literally across the street from Churchill Downs so I've been around it my whole life. Those animals are treated incredibly well.

There's always the exception of an asshole trainer but it's few and far between and severely frowned upon in the industry.

144 minutes of pregame for a two-minute event.

I was going to mock it until I realized that ratio would mean a 72-hour Super Bowl pregame show and...that's about what we get.

(Based on a 60-minute game time. Based on actual run time you'd be talking around 258 hours and even a soulless hybrid of Chucky, Chris Berman and Neon Deion could talk that long)

Hell, for the draft you get weeks of pre-event shows (and a godawful movie that I feel bad about paying to watch) for a three day event that should be a two day event.

If you don't know how to muddle the mint it'll never turn out properly. Back in my drinking days I never had a good mint julep.

As far as the race goes, California Chrome is the favorite for a reason. Anything can happen, of course, but I would bet the favorite today.

Back from the OTB. Spent $100, 97 bets. (16 $1 T-boxes, $4 on 20 win). Wife spent her scratch on a couple nose bets only.

Historically between us, we'll have brunch at the finest establishment tomorrow. Or burgers at the pub if we wash. Either way, I call it a win-win-win weekend because we have fun doing it together.

Pretty good description of D Wayne Lukas. That man has ruined some fine horses.... Azeri, Mine That Bird, and by the looks of it yesterday, I'll Have Another.

Fortunately most trainers are not like him.
