I can remember my dad telling me it made him sad that I'd never grow up to have kids of my own because the world was going to end in a nuclear holocaust (of course our Pentecostal asses would be raptured the hell out of here first).

I used to wonder why he'd always give me shiat if I brought home bad grades, or why he even bothered sending me to school at all since it clearly didn't if I was educated or not if the world was going to end.

They used to test the air raid sirens at noon in our town too so they'd let everyone synchronize their clocks. When I was little I'd get anxious during the air raid tests because I thought "if I was the Russians, I'd attack right when they're testing their air raid sirens because everyone would think it was a test".

Good.  Just like the "duck and cover" generation, maybe they'll grow up to do something about it....and hopefully doing even better.

Seriously. Our global warming was going to increase the temperature about 3000 degrees in 1/100 of a second. Then it would eventually get colder.

This is an easy fix, sit them in front of the television to watch Fox News a few hours a day, and then they can deny climate change like a real man.

Don't worry kids. Global warming is as real as Santa and the monsters under your bed.

Like 25 years ago i remember droughts so severe everyone had brown lawns for weeks here. Was just glad i didn't have to mow lawns.

Have yet to see anything close to that again.

On the one hand, we were being told that the Redscould obliterate the planet at any moment. On the other, music radio was constantly feeding us Bobby McFerrin and "Don't Worry, Be Happy."

Talk about sending a kid mixed messages...

I lived in fear of Killer Bees as a child. They were coming. Everyone was talking about it on the TV and everywhere i went.

All of my goofy relatives lived thinking they would be taken up in The Rapture some day.

I have a Confession Bear moment when I realize that I smirked a little each time one of them died without it happening....

Ohh yeah! They had some stupid made for tv movie about a family being terrorized by killer bees, and I only remember the tagline because it was so stupid: this  will  be a true story! Yeah, whatever. How about the summer of the shark and how you were going to die the minute you were in the water?

I think that was the one where they drove the car into the superdome and turned the temperature down enough to kill them all.

But I can't keep all the killer bee movies straight.

I remember the hysteria about how it was going to mutate into an airborne virus and then everyone would get infected just by being in the same building or bus as a gay person.

I don't really reemebr that specific of a thing. I mostly just remember the "half of you will get aids by the time you're an adult" speeches. Maybe that's what they were getting at.

The thoughts of spontaneous combustion and 2012 were what farked up my childhood. Global warming doesn't bother me, because it's inevitable. We're certainly making a (negative) impact, but it's not like the climate wouldn't change if we weren't here.

Growing up in the 70's I was told by scientists and teachers that we were entering a mini ice age that would last a thousand years . So after high school I moved down south to buy up land so that when the global cooling refugees arrived I could sell them a plot at jacked up prices.

Also, it's in the government's interest to keep the people in constant fear, makes us more suggestive.

I bet the pharmaceutical companies don't mind.  Profit!

I remember when I was little, back in the 70s and 80s, sometimes you'd be watching TV and there'd be a test of the emergency broadcasting thing.  Back then I didn't think anything of it.

Can't.  Too busy being douchy, whiny, edgy millenials.  Hard to change the world when your head is buried in Facebook, Snapchat, and Whatsapp all day biatching about how the Republicans are evil, corporations are out to destroy us, and someone said something mean about a gay person.  Not to mention the Kardashians are planning another wedding/baby/divorce/whatever and we need to campaign for the next state to legalize getting high.  In Europe, the government or business tries to screw the youth and they riot by the thousands.  Here they run off to write an angry blog post.

This is why the 1% owns you all.  When the seas rise, they'll just retreat to their mountain lairs.

I remember seeing that Nostradomus movie narrated by Orson Welles when I was about 10 or so. After the part where NY gets nuked, I don't think I slept for a week. I was convinced we had about 10 years left to live.

Kids are also fed a message that they can help to fix the world if they think and act green.  Many of them try really hard to be environmentally-friendly people, which is good, but then the messages only continue to become more dire and hopeless.  I can imagine some of them might be confused or disenchanted by that.  It sucks that no matter how hard people in the West try to save the planet the careless actions of a population ten times greater everywhere else continues polluting, clear-cutting and destroying as if it were a competition.  Even if the US, Canada, EU, Japan and those other "first world" nations completely repair their local environments (fat chance), China, India, SE Asia and Africa are only now arriving where we were 50 years ago.  The worst is yet to come.  That kind of sucks.
