I can relate.  While digging into a cousin's lengthy list of convictions

male/son.

Not just the UK, it's everywhere.  Exercise of authority requires taking responsibility.  As long as you let yourself be handcuffed by the rules, you can't be held responsible.

Yeah, this has cost her family personally the equivalent of a quarter of a million U.S. dollars. Over something they didn't do and had no control over. Every penny should be paid back to her with interest (and paid through deduction from the payroll of every involved agency, not through other tax-based budgets)  along with signed letters of apology from the head of every agency involved.

If Australia wanted them as citizens, this would have been fixed in 5 minutes.  Australia doesn't want them but this is the only reason they could find to deny citizenship.

This is like the time I decided to get an insurance quote for a new motorcycle from Progressive.  They'd just started a wave off "now we insure motorcycles!" commercials and they were giving me a great rate on a classic sports car so I figured I'd give them a shot.  "Your rate would be $3,000 annually."  I laughed and said, "Is that with the multi-vehicle discount."  "Yes."  So I had my existing motorcycle insurance company cover it for $300/year.  Progressive obviously didn't want to insure me but they didn't have a good reason to deny me outright so they just gave me a ridiculous price.

There have been a number of times when I've needed to show my birth certificate for something. Passport and driver's license off the top of my head, I think. I know it's not something anyone looks at regularly. I just think it's kind of odd that anyone can go their entire life without looking at their birth certificate once.

The mirror has what's perhaps a better article.  It specifies that her birth certificate correctly states she's female, it's the registration that says male.

Given that we have a dispute between official documents, and what I think was a female name for the time, and the evidence, I'd fix the registration.  Though I think trannyphobes have made that more difficult.

See how powerful self-image is? If you're told something and believe it, it can change your life. That little boy grew up believing he was a girl and he managed to give birth to five kids. Through a vagina and everything.

Of course, now that he knows the truth, he might end up sprouting a penis.

The story made me look up my birth certificate and I discovered that I was born in a Naval hospital on the East coast, so despite living in a desert region with no appreciable surface water for more than 30 years, I now know I should be sexually attracted to belly buttons.

/What?

How do people always spend so much money in these situations?  150,000 pounds (around $250,000 US) and nothing has been accomplished yet?  Unless the article includes in that sum being forced to sell property in Australia at a huge loss to rush back home (not specified), I can't see where it all would have gone.  It should be pretty straightforward, involving some paperwork and perhaps a face-to-face meeting with some government bureaucrat.  Sure, that kind of thing takes ages because reading a form takes government offices 4-6 weeks to accomplish, but it shouldn't have been that crazy.

Australian here, our immigration rules are completely made up as we go along. No shiat, we had a government which excised all of the (Australian territory) islands from our migration zone to make things harder for refugees arriving by boat. When that didn't work (still no shiat, I'm not making this up) the next government excised mainland Australia from the Australian migration zone.

So we don't need anything this stoopid to refuse citizenship. We can and do make up any stoopid we like.

For the record, I'm not defending the Australian government by any means. But to answer your question, I don't need to scrutinize a birth certificate to recognize a glaring mistake.

$250k would be really easy in this situation.  Moving is expensive, moving between countries more so.  She had to move a house of 5 from Australia to England after only 1 year.  Plane tickets alone were probably in the range of $10k, then you figure in temporary housing while your stuff catches back up with you, buying a new place, perhaps breaking the lease on the old one, etc...

Of course, why she couldn't submit for a record correction, perhaps with a DNA sample, I don't know.

In 37 years I've never seen mine, wanted to see it, needed to see it, etc.  I've had background checks done by the FBI on 4 separate occasions (needed for guided tours on nuclear submarines), been married twice, bought interesting items and nobody cares what that paper says.
