Being on the wrong side of a recluse in the past entitles me to tell subby to go straight to hell for that headline.

Why are people so terrified of spiders, even the utterly harmless ones? Is it the two extra legs? I don't get it.

And the way they lower themselves down silently from the ceiling and dangle behind your head just where you're going to turn around into them in the middle of the night.

No sleeping tonight.  Perhaps I can cure cancer or do something useful rather than sit in the corner rocking back and forth.

I spent two fun filled days in the hospital because of a bite, there's nothing like seeing three feet of gauze being pulled out of a bullet sized hole in your leg.

I have this old Creepy Tales(can't remember the exact name but one of those old pulp magazines) that has a story in it about a hiker who comes upon a small web. He applauds the spider's ingenuity of using a leaf as a lure and continues on secure in his superiority. Then as he's walking he sees something shiny and investigates only to become entangled in the web of a giant spider who proceeds to have lunch.

Genetic memory.  The people who are naturally afraid of small things that can kill you before you realize that you're being attacked are the ones who lived long enough to have kids.

Danger Avoid Death: [loldamn.com image 480x364]

Also, grenades don't sneak into your bed late at night, hide in your bath towel to bite you when you're naked, or build a web on your steering wheel so you have to spend the entire drive to work looking at the sun visor instead of at the road.

The size relationship between spiders and mammals used to be different. A lot of them probably developed vertebrate venoms in a time when they were still hunting a lot of vertebrates (and said vertebrates were probably eating spiders and raiding their webs).

There's no better wake-up then stumbling into the shower first thing in the morning and seeing a spider camped right above your head. By the time you've done the "cup your hands to gather water from the shower head, take two steps back, and hurl it upwards at spider" routine until It finally falls and makes it way down the drain, you're wired enough to run across Mongolia.

I like spiders.

Mostly they are nice. Sometimes they are cranky.

Puts them slightly above humans I guess.

The chief curator of the insect zoo where I worked was deathle afraid of works. Someone put a sticker in the shape of an earthworm on the floor of the facility, and he about went nuts.

Those aren't spiders, they're harvestmen (or daddy long-legs if you prefer). Not spiders, not venomous, and harmless.

A buddy of mine was a firefighter-paramedic, and one night in the station, his "buddies" decided to put one of the guys' prized tarantula on his chest while he was sleeping and then wake him up. Wake up he did, and when he saw the thing on his chest, he grabbed it, bolted upright, and splattered it against a wall. The owner started whining about the value of the spider, but my friend said "you should have known I'm arachnophobic. You reap what you sow."
