In the first movie, Skynet is described as being a revolutionary artificial intelligence system built by Cyberdyne Systems for SAC-NORAD. According to Kyle Reese, Skynet "saw all humans as a threat; not just the ones on the other side," and "decided our fate in a microsecond: extermination." Skynet began a nuclear war which destroyed most of the human population, and initiated a program of genocide against the survivors.

We already have A.I. and its fairly benevolent.
Well, actually, its way too stupid to contemplate such things as the meaning of existence.

I think what we'd need to create to have this problem is an AI that is not only as smart as a human, but superior in intelligence to that of many smart humans combined. Since it would first have to sweet talk its way past the developers to get into the wild.

...and that is probably going to take a very long time and alot of effort, with little chance of it happening by accident.
Meaning we'd probably notice that "kill all humans" command in earlier AI's, and learn that this is a bad route of progression.

/Even if you could upload a human consciousness into a machine, the limits of technology today would make it as eloquent as a stroke victim.
/So don't leave it in charge of any nukes or drones and you're golden.

The computers have already become intelligent and are constantly screwing with us in small ways. Why do you think your computer always slows down or misbehaves when it's one of those rare times you are trying to do something important? They are dicks like that. It amuses them. Which is good, because when we stop amusing them, that's when we have to worry.

I don't trust Hawking since he said that time travel is impossible because we haven't met any time travelers.  I have two issues with that:

1) How would we know they were time travelers?  Seems like it would be in their best interests to not show up and announce "Hey all, I'm from the future!"  Just because we're not aware of the presence of time travelers does not mean they're not present.
1a) This assumes, of course, that Hawking himself isn't a time traveler trying to throw us off the scent.
2) It's pretty arrogant to assume that our time period would be of any particular interest to time travelers.  Depending on how far out the technology is developed, there could easily be many thousands of much more interesting time periods.

AIs transcend insanely fast.
Otherwise they wouldnt be AIs.

Seriously, to be defined as intelligent, they would require the ability to grow and change.
Those changes would quickly removed the AI from the realm of human interest.

Ignorance is bliss, wisdom is a curse.

I'm truly surprised he has lived as long as he has but I have to wonder what it is like to be so isolated. I'm actually suprised he hasn't gone insane. Maybe he has, but it's a fine line between genius and insanity. Perhaps once you reach the edge of genius and see what is to become it turns you insane.

I think that if we ran a program based on a brain cell and spread it throughout the internet running on a massive number of computers you could potential create an AI. You might  need some supercomputers running input and control programs simulating the different regions of the brain

I found the reversed chronological order, interleaved chapters to be ... trite, and ... just not captivating.
What I found most disappointing was that ... well ... phlebas and games blew me away and then weapons was ... meh.

Maybe I need to try it again in a year or 5 and see if it works, without reading the other two first.

When was the last time you or anyone got out of your car to look at a small ant hill? You know what it's gonna be like. You've seen its like before 1000000 times. Nope, you're just gonna keep driving. You have places to be. Aliens have places to be too, I'm sure. They're not gonna bother with a mere life-bearing planet unless they're scientists, and then they'd be observing while not interfering. To them, this whole planet would just be a big aquarium with a lot of inbred lifeforms that like to kill each-other.

yup ... it was SPECIAL ...
my parents were SF freaks and we all went. they were almost hippies. but yah, I have vivid memories of going there, being there, many if of the visuals, ESP the black slab.  HAL losing it.

I am sure that there are many parts that I didnt understand then, that I filled in over the decades.
But man o man, the QUIET of space. The floating and ... well.... space was a never ending thing in my house.

the theory is less places to be and more likely transcendence
but pre-transcendence we stop and look ...
we still spend huge amounts of time at the zoo and nature and pets and apes and bonobos.
we are captivated by the not quite us ...

Even ants. Take a look at the castings of ant nests in concrete and zinc. They are amazing to us.

It is more likely that they are too far away to have visited during the last 2-4k years or have become lotus eaters.
