That this war has lasted so very long is the problem. The village idiot should have dropped 6 nukes on the 'Stan' the dropped 2 more on the pak nuke storage.

The had a nice short phone call with the Saudi's the Iranians and the Syrians, inquire as to who was willing to be next. Then open multi party peace talks.

So let's look at the facts:

He was popping 40 oxys a day.
He was heavily drinking
He was prone to violence at home
He wanted to return to a warzone where he was maimed
The war was stupid since it accomplished little and Osama was hiding next door in Pakistan.

More power for this soldier guy, but he's not really a hero. For fark's sake, he got blown while taking a leak and not noticing there was a cheapo bomb right beside him. scalpod: When has there not been a war in Afghanistan?

Well, there's only been war in Afghanistan when there's actually been an "Afghanistan" to have a war in. And that's only been since the British and Russians decided to give the region a name so they could have a defined area to fight over.

Prior to that, it was an ill-defined splotch of desert and mountains full of tribes, bandits, warlords and nomads, who all lived in separate valleys, fought with each other non-stop except when some idiot decided to invade the general vicinity; then the warlords would marry their sons and daughters to establish some kind of "peace", join forces long enough to convince the idiot that victory was impossible, and then back at it.

It's always been easy to take out Kabul and Kandahar (as cities usually are); but as far as pacifying the valleys and hill tribes, forget it. Only Ghengis Khan ever found a winning formula when he took down the Khwarezm Empire, and that was by pure unadulterated genocide. Nobody else even came close. And since they like it that way, it's probably better just to leave them to it. Since we don't need the Kyber Pass any more, I'm not sure why anyone bothers trying to "conquer" Afghanistan nowadays.

Maybe...but there are lots of places to do that besides Afghanistan. The question and answer were specific to Afghanistan. If you want to kill people with few repercussions, there's always sub-Saharan Africa or South America. And as far as controlling the heroin trade, that's not why governments do it. If the cartels were making a play for Afghanistan, maybe; but as Colombia has known for decades, the way to control drug money at the growth end is to let the farmers do their thing and skim profits from the manufacturers. There's just not THAT much money in opium to make it worth anyone's time to fight goat-herders with IEDs when you could buy the Taliban for a fifth of that.

No one gets caught in the crossfire of animal control officers. The US is training the Afghans in combat again, and brought in the Pakistanis as a bonus this time. Don't be surprised when this war comes back to our shores. Dehumanizing them may make you comfortable with their murder, but it's not going to calm their comrades or their families.

Drum circles and liberal arts degrees? That's the best you can do? This moron would still have his legs and his sanity if he'd taken that route.
