The civility oath will remind lawyers that the profession isn't just about winning cases

Yeah, well, doctors do too... and you see where that's gone.

Hell...public servants swear to uphold the Constitution and well... that's kind of a laugh isn't it?

This may be a new requirement for the state bar, but not to some of the county bar associations. And even though it's not legally binding, attorneys can still cite it in briefs when they want to attack each other ad hominem.

They have to take an oath to "strive" to be nice. They don't have to actually be nice.

Be excellent!

As a blood-sucking, money-hungry California attorney, I'm glad this isn't retroactive.

I'm sorry, your honor, but that is unenforceable.

I'll be as big an assh*le as I was before.

FTA:

the oath one takes to "faithfully discharge the duties of an attorney" will be joined by language stating the lawyer "will strive to conduct myself at all times with dignity, courtesy, and integrity."

I guess I'm ok with this.

I can f*ck you over politely, I guess.

I agree

FTFA, "be nice to one another."

That doesn't mean they have to be nice to non-lawyers.

So does that mean, if you go up against a newly-minted lawyer, you can abuse the hell out if him/her and he/she can't fight back?

Oh, you're gonna have fun.

See my previous comment about going up against newly-minted lawyers if you're already an admitted lawyer. Have a nice day.

I'm not an admitted lawyer yet, but I'm a mean, nasty, well-honed biatch with years of trench warfare to my credit.

Bring it.

It's a good thing lawyers are such honest people, so we'll know they'll all adhere to the letter of the oath.

Be nice.  Until it's time to not be nice.

An aggressive, arseholish personality can be a very effective lawyer skill. So can collegiality and niceness. A significant part of the lawyer learning curve is figuring out when to employ each in any set of circumstances. Some natural acting ability helps.

If you only know how to be an aggressive arse, you will win sometimes, mostly against the weak or meek. But you are more likely to be easy pickings for those who can adapt. It is genuinely fun to make an arsehole lawyer completely lose his/her shiat during hearing in front of clients and judges.

See that changes the meaning of my comment entirely.  I thought you were an already-admitted lawyer and would thus "have a nice day" torturing new lawyers who had sworn to be nice.  Which, by now, I know you would fully enjoy.

So, should I be worried that one of my absolute favorite farkers self-describes as a "mean, nasty, well-honed biatch?"  I mean I was already worried about your profile-revealed obsession with serial killers.  What does all this say about me?
