great, I just sent my 9-year-old nephew a text telling him to look for the Guardians of the Galaxy and Rocket Raccoon free ones because he's been intrigued by the upcoming movie.

and my text ended with... "there will be lots of fun titties for you to pick up"

stupid auto-fill.

yeah, I immediately texted my brother and sister-in-law apologizing for that.

it was supposed to be 'titles' not 'titties'... my brother laughed, she said she was going test it later to see if that really is an auto-fill option on her phone.

strangely enough, there usually are lots of titties at a comic book store, just none of them belong to females.

In before all the FARK comic shop owners come in and tell us about how they don't give out free comics to the people who aren't regulars because of some twisted, backwards, misanthropic, exclusive comic book clientele reason.

Honestly, the point of FCBD is to get new people to try comics. And what happens? The douchebag shop owners hand out books on a case-by-case basis, mainly holding the free comics for their buddies and regulars and leaving the curious, the non-regular customers, the non-collectors, and the parents who bring their kids for free comics all wondering why they even bothered.

I've met shop owners who won't give free comics on FCBD to anyone who doesn't have a pull list. Jerks.

We're all stacked and ready here in Indy. Gave out 26,000 books last year. Shooting for 30,000 this year. Good weather, so the lines have already started forming outside our stores. scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.netscontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net

Dude. You need to farking move. We make sure to give out at least two free ones (and I hope Subby was kidding about shopping. You don't get to just walk in and grab some).
Anyway, we make sure everyone gets at least two so we can save a little to do it Sunday as well, for those who couldn't make it saturday.
Any extras we give out to kids all through the year.

Great!  But both of our local shops closed in the last year.  Now I have to decide whether or not I want to drive for about an hour and a half just to tell the kids, "sorry, they're all out."

\probably won't

I'm an old dude and I kind of have a phobia about people in real life thinking I'm creepy, therefore I'm afraid to ask about this at the comic book store down the block when I go there. (Obviously I don't care if Farkers think I'm creepy. Maybe you already do if you were around when I had one of those spectacular hotlinking failures. No matter.)

So anyway, they have this character on a decal on one of the side doors:

Who is that? Are the stories she's in any good? Just curious. Thanks in advance.

That's more of a cutesy look than she usually gets, but it's Vampirella. Horror genre, but mostly known for being scantily clad. Never read much of it myself; I generally don't trust anything that needs to use sex in order to sell to be otherwise of merit, but she got a 90's B-movie. *shrug*

My brother worked for Harris Publishing for a while, and he gave me a stack of Vampirella. I found it entertaining, though it's been long enough that I couldn't tell you why I liked it.

So am I a terrible person for going digital? I just don't have room for long boxes anymore, so I love being able to keep everything in the Comixology cloud. Plus, I think the comics generally look better on my iPad screen than print - the colors are more vivid and everything just pops.

Argh, there's a store near me doing it, but 1. Don't feel like traveling 15 minutes by bus (too damn lazy today), 2. Considering how small the place is, it's probably already out of the freebies.

I give out an unlimited number of books to everyone who walks in. I ask they only take the books they want and leave the rest for someone who would appreciate them. I've gone through over 20,000 comics as of 3pm and 1500 Mouseguard hardcovers. Feel free to have those morans contact me so that I can explain to them how spending 8-10K on this one day can generate 100K in increased annual sales every year you do it. Twitter check-ins.

You, I like.

So many stores have went to "limit two free books per customer" or something similar, or worse as Nix describes it, which sort of goes against the whole FREE COMIC BOOK DAY thing as it was when it began about a decade ago. No limits, just a way to get people into the stores.

Now, people go in, maybe get their one book, and never come back because the owner decided it's FREE COMIC BOOK DAY*! *free with purchase of $50 or more

/I've never done a FCBD before, mostly because it's not for people like me. Plus, I hate people.

I just came back from my local coming book store, Acme Comics in Greensboro. It seems every year they go more and more gonzo turning it almost into a con. Not only do they give you a whole bag of comics, not just one or two but like a stack of them with different packs depending on your age range, they fly in comic book artists to do free sketches, have  face painting artists (now you too can look like Wolverine!), hold trivia games with prizes and they've even hooked up with the coffee shop a few doors down because they have a huge screen, to play superhero movies.

It's awesome. The only downside is like a con, you are going to be waiting everywhere. (There have been people camping out since Wednesday, to give you an idea of how crazy this event gets.)  My feet are killing me. But, hey, free stuff that people actually want!

Don't feel creepy. The comic shop I go to has two comic clubs, The Women's Guild of Comic intent and the Tree Fort it's for older comic readers. And no it's not creepy it's just literature.

Not really, but some LCS have a partnership with comixology so you can buy thru their website. Mine was one of the first ones and was interviewed about it.

Most of my comics are digital, but I buy TPBs so I can have them on my shelf along with the rest of my library. Sometimes, the feel of paper is so much better than an ipad, even if I have most of my collection in the ipad for quick access.

/PS. you should check Rat Queens.
