Iya Valley in Tokushima?
Alex Kerr ( wrote about the place in his book Lost Japan. It's always been pretty remote. I can't remember for sure if it was the Iya valley, but some of the Heike fled to the remote valleys of Shikoku after they lost.

Actually, I should clarify: Kerr's  Chiioriproject in the Iya valley was his way of addressing the problems he wrote about in  Lost Japan. Well, that's the impression I got from a speech of his I heard a long time ago.
