So each of these pensioners with 20 years of service gets an average  check of almost $10,000 every December?  Nice deal for a retiree.

It's like when millions of dollars just appear in someones account and they say it was a simple mistake, but you know some seriously shifty shiat has to be going on behind the scenes to have that happen.

Fine. Can I keep
The interest I earned in one day?

The interest earned on a 10000 deposit for a single day? I'm sure they'd allow you to keep the penny you earned.

Don't spend it all in one place!

Interest from a bank account? What do you think this is, 1987?

They typically make 6 figures in their pensions, doesn't sound like a big deposit.

My thoughts exactly. Why the hell would that much money be moving around in the first place?

I swear, that money was just resting in my account before I moved it on!

/Or maybe someone got an email from the Nigerian Prince minister of the treasury?

Ha a local bank called the other day trying to get me to open a savings account there. Their big pitch was 1% annually, talking big like it was a great deal.

So did you tell them that a -2% real rate of return is just a bit stupid?

That's going to be one hell of an overdraft fee from the city's bank.

Not if the cost of living is 5x higher than any place in the country.

Most of the retirees were traveling out of the country and unavailable for comment.

How do you figure that "they" "typically" have six-figure pensions? Top-step pay for an FDNY fireman is ~76,000. Are you telling me that they get a 133% pension after 20 years? Damn, I should have tried to get on in New York.

"Struggles to pay them"

NYC's budget is around $70 billion. Police, fire, and corrections account for about $7 billion. That's operations, capital projects and payroll. The city is "struggling" to pay payroll that amounts to less than 5% of the annual budget? Please, be serious.

As a former Government Pension employee and Payroll Manager I'm getting a kick...

\Somebody's ass just got fired (unless, they are union of course).
\\ This FUBAR is a lot easier to do than you would think in most pay systems.
\\\ It's a whole lot funnier when it happens to someone else.
\\\\ Slashies!!

How many do you think will try to make withdrawals before the mistake is corrected?

Because that number is not going to be zero.

Not sure what the median montly allowance is for this pension, but I doubt it is that high. Remember the older guys didn't make the big bucks.

My experience is about 25%, more than half of those will be deliberate.

And it is a farking biatch to try and recover.

I felt a great disturbance in the balance sheet, as if millions of dollars suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.  I fear something terrible has happened.
