They should have though about that before ever being in Florida.

Seriously, arrested and sent to jail only to die in a gas explosion is like the most normal thing that's ever killed someone in the Sunshine State.

Even Florida executes people better than Oklahoma.

More proof that the state can't be handled to run our penal system. If this was a private for-profit prison, it never would have happened.

Calls to four area hospitals showed that 151 people - at least one a corrections officer - had been taken there with non-life threatening injuries.

so they only managed to execute 2 and 150 others got away scott free? way to go Florida. always the farkup...

I was going to say that Oklahoma must be horribly jealous that Florida can do it so easily.

Not to threadjack but why didn't the Okies just call the physician-assisted-suicide people? Or did that come up in the other threads?

More info from the local paper; Link

They smelled gas 24 hours before the explosion. They took all the woman inmates to Santa Rosa County jail, across the bay. Because the county commissioners took over running the jail from the sheriffs office, there was no spokesman to deal with the public, many of whom were frantic about their relatives in the jail. Otherwise they did a heck of a job getting everybody out and taken care of without anyone escaping.

Usually when something like this happens in Florida, it's because they brought in CCA (corrections corporation of America) a for profit prison corporation notorious for cutting costs; but they were not running this jail.

They still use the gas chamber in florida?

Am I the only one who RTFA?

The blast late on Wednesday partially leveled the four-story Escambia County Jail's central booking facility in Pensacola

No, this wasn't a private prison, and the inmates were awaiting trial.  Innocent until proven guilty and all that.

Successful troll I'm sure, but...

This was an intake facility. There is probably at least one guy injured who had a minor domestic argument, and the cops had to take someone to jail, even though there wouldn't be any charges against him.

Shoplifting, driving on suspended license, etc.

Douche?

I'm here in Pensacola, survived the horrific storm we had here on the 28th.  At that point, the energy companies, including natural gas, were telling people to BOLO for the smell of gas.  Probably because of the video taken over at Cordova Park where a nat gas line was exposed and spewing gas into the air due to the erosion, flooding, mudslides.

The fact that Sheriff Morgan lost this jail to the county commission about 5-6 months ago because he had the audacity to ask for funds to fix this jail.  The county commission voted to take the jail away from him.  Every one of those cocksuckers should be resigning right now.  While the jail staff were telling their superiors about the smell of gas, they were told to "open the windows and turn on a box fan until the smell goes away".  As you can probably imagine, this did nothing but allow the jail to hit that scientific air/fuel ratio necessary for detonation.  And then.  Boom.  The booking portion of the jail collapsed, killing 2 people who hadn't even seen a farking judge.  IMHO, the county commission, through their heavy handidness and ignorance of the jail fixes that Sheriff Morgan sentenced these potentially innocent men to death.

You had better believe our next county commissioners meeting will be filled to the brim with the friends/family of the victims and they'll be the county commissioners have it.  The county commissioners sent Sheriff Morgan out as a sacrificial lamb yesterday while they were lying about the number of dead/injured and Morgan got an earful from a mother/bail bondsman of one of the inmates.  Families of the injured and dead were at the jail within about 15-20 minutes and saw more than 2 body bags being hauled out.  The county commission is trying to do a backwoods redneck spinjob on this because they know the amount of liability they've just opened this county up to has went to 18 out of 10.  We're already the poorest and most violent county in florida.  I'm afraid we won't see that change any time soon.

If they weren't guilty, then why did the cops arrest them? Answer me that, smart guy.
