Except for the freezing cold, non-breathable atmosphere and deadly UV radiation and Sasquatch as well.

Good lord.  I was there in '98.  Ever did sandruns in the back and up on the ridge?  We had a guy trip and do a sailor's dive over a sharp incline.  Stone, not sand.  Spent the rest of his training in a cast.

i just want to be in your panorama
i'm going to take what's coming to me
no entanglements and no compromise
get the picture, i'm on my knees
looking at your hot shot
turning down your offer
well i'm ripping it up
i'm looking away
i'm pulling my flag up
i'm miles away
with nothing to do
except think about you
i just want to be in your panorama

But you would have only 1/3 the weight.

You get the checkered flag.

Uhhh did i09 just now find out about the Mars panoramas?

Throw in the night panorama while you are at it.

Is that Milky Way background from the planet itself or superimposed on the image?

Fascinating. Thank you for that. Our night sky is kinda lame compared to viewing the stars on Mars.

/And thank you, Subby.
//Am very grateful to you both.

I believe it is superimposed, scroll down below the panorama and you can see the credits
"VISTA telescope: 9 billion pixel photo of a Milky Way European Southern Observatory"
/still cool though :p

Have you ever been out in the middle of nowhere on a clear night with next to no light pollution? You can see a decent amount of cosmic dust in the sky similar to this photo without any viewing aids. Used to lay underneath the stars in such a place and it feels quite surreal to see so much that you can't see when even around a town.

Yes, and it answers the question why the gods and religion hold such sway over Man.

It's a strange place. I keep wanting to see frost on the rocks.

Where's the lichen?

I keep thinking, what if someone got a water drilling rig out there?

It looks like you could drill for water.

That's a fake. You can see the reflection of the pre-Photoshop daytime image on the shiny parts of the rover. It's a well done fake, but there are some details that were missed. The stars should be smeared due to the rotation of the planet, too much of the landscape is in focus for the aperture setting required, etc.

It had me too at first, until I realized that with no moon* there couldn't be nighttime shadows on the surface of Mars--zodiacal light is too diffused.

*Phobos and Deimos are both tiny and approximately as reflective as asphalt. They would cast little in the way of shadows.

This is the closest I could find to a real night-time photo from Curiosity. The bright dot is Earth.

I suspect the cameras on the MSL aren't designed to be able to take good night photos. They're probably optimized for daytime conditions, seeing as how it'd be really difficult to set up a night photo when you don't have a radio line-of-sight to Earth in the first place.

Cthulhu_is_my_homeboy: That's a fake

Yea it got me at first Cthulhu. Then I noticed how it clipped from light to dark rather in a rather odd fashion. Here is the collection of mars panoramas that 360views has.  http://www.360cities.net/search/mars-panorama

Note there are 2 pages with some nonsense scattered between some of the mars panoramas. Near the middle of the second page is "Martian Landscape with Rover Deck" and then at the bottom of the 2nd page there are 4 panoramic images that were stitched together over 5 years ago. The quality appears to be much better now.

( also note there is another more apparent fake w/ aliens on the 1st page  :p  )

So, this is what it feels when the editor won't save any changes made on the page.

So barren. Kinda makes you wonder how Uncle Owen and Aunt Beroo ever made a living there, don't it?

Huh.

I thought it looked like a rock, but apparently there are Lexuses (Lexus'? Lexi?) on Mars.
