I'm going to guess one of those cars was her car.

The best part?  Both CSX and the city knew about this impending issue 16 years ago, and that was because the earth surrounding the construction had been sinking for 15 years up to that point:

FYI

That is the CSX rail line that runs through part of the city. Several spots like that where the tracks run below street level but there are small tunnels under the cross streets, probably a good 100yrs old in some places. Several days of heavy rain, the ground is already saturated and yesterday Baltimore totaled the 2nd heaviest rainfall amount in it's recorded history. It just gave away there. The basic Infrastructure in plenty of places in the US is ready to fall apart. All it needs is a little push in some places.

The screaming reaction is really interesting. I wonder if it's been widely studied.

Remember that video a few months back of the large, tourist-filled boat sinking and the woman on the rescue boat just shrieking her head off?

I guess we need to have some emergency-shriekers in every group, because in certain situations it would be useful to alert others to the need for assistance.

It think it's safe to say that you never experienced a natural disaster that damaged something that would cost you lots of money to replace.... Or having to deal with insurance companies looking after their own interest..

well, when it actually collapsed the video shut off in a hurry as they moved away from it.  so good observations, Captain Oblivious.

She was screaming because she knew she was going to have to deal with the insurance company later?

Well..... uh.....

There is always a screamer in any group during a disaster. I think that evolution placed them there so that the Mastodon would stomp them or the saber tooth would eat them while the rest of the group escaped.

By the way, I used to live a few blocks from there. First at the corner of 27th and Maryland, then at Charles just past 30th. That used to be home. It's good I moved away in 1996, even if I did wind up in Lexington, KY: there's a better tax base here because the city of Lexington merged with Fayette County and got the horse farms and so on. Imagine if Baltimore City extended halfway to Pennsylvania on one end and around Columbia on the other. "Whaddaya mean you fled from the Negroes? Surprise! And see the bus lines? SUCKERS."

By the way, the reason there's so much poverty in the Bawlamer City is there's so little employment there. There's even worse poverty in eastern Kentucky where the coal mines etc. have shut down, and everybody there is White. It's the lack of green that makes you poor, not the melanin quotient.

In a just world Hunt Valley should collapse into a big sinkhole.

P.S. Yes of course I'm drunk. You would be too if you drank more rum than your liver could process.

It's annoying to us because we're sitting in the comfort and safety of our own homes watching the video. You stand outside and witness the ground you've taken for granted all your life start collapsing 20 feet away.

Well.. to be clear, I was making fun of the person implying that the lady was screaming because she was worried about insurance...

For anyone blaming Obama for lack of infrastructure spending, here is Paul Krugman to give you some aid:

But don't forget to blame Larry Summers as well.

Oh.  I see the tracks in the tunnel, now.  All I noticed earlier was the water.

Either way, looks like the bulkhead got undercut.

Here are some pics I took when I was living in Santo Domingo. The truck was a new Toyota FJ.

We just had a ton of rain and the retaining wall gave out. Thankfully no one was hurt.

I will never understand screaming.  I've encountered scary shiat and never screamed, not because I'm not scared or so tough or something, but because I'm usually doing something much more useful like running away or scrambling to escape.  But standing there screaming?  (Because that's what the screamers do, they just stand there.)  Well, I guess we know who's more likely to die from inaction in a calamity.

Because we don't have stuff like that around here. That never happens. This isn't a regular flood zone or something. (Which made me wonder, and apparently it's an engineering failure. Nothing that would normally happen.)
