OMG it's a DOT! lol

considering the data has to be fired through space and then recombined by computers... I'll bet it's a little distortion they didn't bother to clean up.

2004-02-07 03:11:20 PM
i doubt its data corruption. the original images are bitmaps.

i will go for the dust theory until someone posts another picture of the same thing. but i'm also guessing that they have a film that will go around the lens, similar to nascar cameras, that will spool if there is dust.

Dont forget transmission errors. I dont think the rover transmists the image in a normal file format. This could just be the last 4 pixels that haven't been sent yet.

It's just an errant pixel or something. Look down at the bottom of the picture, you can see one there too.

"13:39:02 Mars local solar time"

I just find it funny we are using the word "local" to describe the time on mars. It's not like we would think it's the time on Saturn.

well of course it's the local time

Crap guys....I would be more concerned of what NASA has blurred on the ground then the dot in the sky.

There are other dots you're missing here (top left at edge of frame) and in others...

Re: winds and dust on Mars. There are regular dust storms which cover significant fractions of the planet, sometimes the entire surface is covered.

Here's info about one in 2003

And anotherr in 2001

Answer: the little round things in this picture are not rocks, but living things. And they can fly.

I've blown these up and played with various levels and found some interesting things - you be the judge.

I am uploading a full res composite and jpg's to this folder (check it around 5:40pm EST):

I love it how there are so many "experts" out there who can deduct so much information and so many "facts" from grainy pictures. This is re: those enterprisemission guys and the other loonies who see something, use their l33t photoshop skills to "enhance" the image, and then are able to conclude what the object is, often crossing into some completely different field of science while doing so. Those guys are geniuses should get a job offer from the CIA or some other spy organization any day now!

I for one think it was one of the many Hot Cocoa Sampler Boxes I shipped out to those companies this winter. Apparently, some people launched them into space.

Yes, there is wind on Mars... hence those huge sandstorms that happen every year. It's dust... Dust can move on and off the lense. Much... like... earth dust!! *gasp*

Elrik--
"What was it?"
"Droid of some kind. I didn't hit it very hard, must've had a self-destruct."
"An Imperial Probe Droid."
"It's a good bet the Empire know's we're here."

So wait...if Mars know's we're there, and tracked us to here...isn't it a matter of time before we pick up a fleet of Star Destroyers coming out of Hyper Space too damn close to the planet? Eh. Not overly concerned. Between us and Russia alone there's enough nukes on this planet to turn Earth into a powder finer than flour 3 times over. Even a Star Destroyer cant touch this. Just picture a bigass ICBM headed for a SD. "Incoming Earth vessel." "Good. Our first catch of the day." Last one too, loser.

/Empire owns Jedi.

This is what the Earth and Moon look like from Mars:
