Worse yet, this is precisely what people did to some of the great monuments of history: the Great Wall of China, Hadrian's wall, an enormous number of palaces, temples, and what not--all looted for building materials as soon as civil authority ceased to protect them.

YOU DID NOT BUILD THAT, DAMMIT. STOP TAKING THE MARBLE FACING AWAY, THIEVE-O-PUBLICANS AND LOOT-O-CRATS.

Virtual worlds are unlikely to be better than the real world because people are still the same -- a lot of people are great visionaries and builders, but a lot are a-holes.

At least it is easy to reboot a virtual world, although it may cause déjà-vu, jamais-vu, or a feeling of not making any progress. Then again, you might be able to perfect yourself as Dingle-berry there, Bill Murray, does in Groundhog Day.

As they said in the old sanitarium (or was it a sanitorium?) motto:  EVERY DAY, IN EVERY WAY, I'M GETTING BETTER AND BETTER.

Too bad about Virtual Denmark. I'd kinda like to see it. I have Danish ancestors and it would be nice to see the Old Country some day, even as a Virtual copy).

At the moment my Danish genealogy is in pieces as well: I have my recent (1872) immigrant family, the Danish Royal families and various marriages with other Royal families such as those of the UK, and finally a third group of really ancient Danes, Swedes and other Vikings who are starting to show up in my regular family trees either as ancestors of the aforementioned Royals or as the ancestors of ordinary nobility and commoners in places like Yorkshire, the Danelaw, Normandy, etc.

I have a surprising number of Danes when you start counting the hidden Danes of the UK and Normandy. I also am surprised by how many of my ancestors came from Yorkshire and Northern Ireland, how many French Huguenots are the ancestors of my Dutch and English American ancestors, and how many Baptists and Quakers there are. The real world is a lot different than I thought it was. Peel away family names and you often find other family and even other ethnicities and nationalities hidden underneath.

For example, the British Runyons of Long Island turned quickly into the French Protestant Rognions. as I went back through the 1600s. The first hint was a wife named Boutcher (Butcher) who turned into a Boucher. A lot of early Anglo-New Yorkers and New Amsterdammerlings were French refugees.

brantgoose: Hadrian's wall

Hadrian's wall was a symbol of oppression and greed to the locals in the north. I'm surprised MORE wasn't destroyed once the Romans left.

FTA: At the time of the model's launch, Thorbjørn Nielsen, one of the model's co-creators, had appealed to users to "make changes in Minecraft-Denmark with respect and show consideration for others".

But you put it on the Internet...

He then followed with, "Also, fart rainbows and slam a revolving door."

Seriously: has Nielsen never actually been on the Internet?

You'd think countries would learn the risks from the dry runs they had putting Copenhagen in Second Earth what with all the penii and the prancing sex-pony gangs and Krystal's Klone Army and tag sprays suggesting Leonard Nimoy should eat more salsa.

How did they expect this NOT to be griefed the shiat out of? They should have made a back up and just made the map available for download.

Parallels to the Great Wall in the North of Westeros could be made, albeit no White Walkers/Others IRL

I'm not familiar with Minecraft, so when you say the map, do you mean the whole thing?   1TB?  That would take the better part of a year at about 40Mbps down, full throttle, 24x7.

I thought EVE online sort of covered this "can't have nice" a long while back.

Also,

brantgoose: the great monuments of history: the Great Wall of China, Hadrian's wall....

Not actually "monuments".
Look what they've done to the Maginot Line! Those bastards are storing wine in the bunkers. Philistines have no regard for history.

Kids on the internet tend to troll and grief, because it's all they have to offer.  Most folks tend to get past that stage when puberty hits and the "LOL I'm being BAD and mom doesn't know!" effect wanes.

Glob damn!
Is it so hard to do your job, that you can't be assed to include a couple pictures in your article?

It's an article about the way something LOOKS for Glob's sake!
