Now that's a really awesome idea. Think of all the glass on a skyscraper being used to harness electricity.

Different tech, but the new Cathedral in Saskatoon generates solar in some of it's stained glass.

Making a solar cell look like an american flag is going to confuse the hell out of teabaggers since they won't know if they should love it because America or hate it because ... why do conservatives hate solar again? Oh, yeah Solyndra.

Teabaggers don't hate solar, most prepper types are into solar in a big way. Conservatives don't hate solar, conservatives hate spending $500,000,000 on a company that was projected to go out of business but funded by the white house anyway as repayment for political contributions. But you seem to be ok with that.

Drown government in a solar heated bathtub!

I haven't heard an update on the project recently, but the Willis (fmr Sears) Tower is getting solar PV powered windows, and has had some installed since 2010.

If it lets light through, it's not a very efficient solar cell.

Fun fact, the Department of Energy, Clean Energy Loan Program (technically called the 1705 program) has given out roughly $16,000,000,000 in loans over the past few years. So far, they've had roughly a 97% success rate with the program, and expect to get back nearly every cent + interest.

It was so successful, they're currently looking to add another $4 billion to the program.

Conservatives love to crow on about Solyndra, A123 and a few of the other flops, but conveniently ignore that well over 95% of the loans are completely successful and are spurring the economy. That's a massive success for any one giving out loans. Enough of a success that in 2013, solar power accounted for 37% of all new capacity in the US, is now growing at an astronomical rate, creating thousands of new jobs (20,000 last year alone) and is expanding domestic manufacturing.

But instead, we hear "herp, derp, solar sucks, winners & losers, coal is king" from the media and ignorant internet commentators.

The researchers are working to improve their numbers with new materials, but there will always be a tradeoff between beauty and utility in this case.

We can't put regular solar panels where we want there to be windows. So that was a surface that would never be able to generate energy without this technology. It may not be as effective as an opaque solar cell, but it is better than no solar cell.

If you could make an infrared opaque but visibly transparent cell that could be made on polyester film to go between the layers in a composite energy efficient window, you'd have the sort of winner that gets you all the chicks.

No, it is not a technical definition of virginity.

We didn't just spend something we had. First we had to counterfeit it up. On top of that both party got some pretty big political contributions back from Solyndra. Sort of like some sort of circle jerk at everyone else's expense.

It's that very sort of expense that is helping drain the wealth out of the capital capitalism needs to function.

And a random question on the topic: do they need to be south facing windows like the panels need to be? I mean, my house is not aligned to north-south, so the windows aren't aligned that way.  I mean, my house in general would be a very bad spot for them, but still.

They'll have to prise my 112 year old stained glass windows out of my cold dead hand. Actually, I'm currently learning how to fix the stuff so I suppose I could add some solar panels. You can cut the solar panels to the required size and shape can't you?

It's amusing the butthurt that Solyndra generated and continues to generate. Keep it up, popcorn's popping.

I thought conservatives hated solar because it:

1. Ain't what his grand pappy did. (conservative)
2. Might look like he cares about someone other than himself. (machismo)
3. Was made by those nerds that the teacher lady liked more than him. (anti-intellectual)

Only 2% efficiency.... Vs 10% for best out there.
