Another thing - let your kids go outside and let them get dirty. Like every day even.. Let them go barefoot, let them eat dirt, let them get cuts and scrapes and boo boos. Let them camp out in the backyard without doing a backyard sweep first. Give their immune systems a workout.

Quit keeping them in perfectly air-conditioned, humidified, air-controlled environments and then wondering why they can't so much as go outside six months of the year without an inhaler and allergy meds. Not knocking those who really have asthma but some of these precious little snow flakes can't so much as get winded by a good walk without mummy & daddy running for some oxygen.

Let the housework go a little. Everything does not have to be spotless. That day old cookie your two-year-old just ate from under the couch? They're not going to die. Let it go.

Let it go already. Being too clean is killing us. There's a difference between clean and sterile.

Yeah, but Serious Post is correct. "Alcohol kills germs within seconds by physically destroying the cell membrane and denaturing proteins within the bacteria." That's not how antibiotics work, therefor ethanol does not carry a risk of creating "superbugs"

I have some comments about Purell too...

It's not an antibiotic and wouldn't contribute to stronger or resistant bacteria.

It may reduce your exposure to (mostly harmless) bacteria which is debatably a bad thing (hygiene hypothesis)

It won't keep you from getting sick most of the time.
Alcohol doesn't kill Norovirus, the most common cause of the stomach "flu." And the cold and flu are usually caught by touching an infected surface and then touching your nose or eyes rather than your mouth. So using hand sanitizer before you eat but after you've spent hours in public touching who-knows-what and rubbing your eyes or scratching your nose is less effective at keeping you healthy than you might think.

Some twits save the remainder for the next time they get sick. Saves on doctor's visits!

Not really. Ethanol is like fire for germs. They don't become resistant. If they didn't die, they didn't get exposed enough.

It's hard but not impossible to get ethanol resistant bugs:

http://jb.asm.org/content/114/1/239.short
The effects of ethanol on the growth of a wild-type  Escherichia coli K-12 are described. These effects include a reduction of the steady-state growth rate and an interference with the division process. They appear as an immediate response to the addition of ethanol and are rapidly reversed by removal of ethanol. Mutants were selected that could grow at a concentration of ethanol that stopped wild-type growth. The growth of one of the mutants we studied (strain S9L100) is stimulated by the presence of ethanol, methanol, or dimethyl sulfoxide. This strain exhibits pleiotropic growth defects including abnormal cell division and morphology. It also appears to have an altered  lac permease function which is not due to a mutation in the  Y gene itself. We conclude that this mutant has an altered membrane and that the membrane defect may be the cause of the abnormal growth properties. The use of compounds which serve as general membrane perturbants and mutants resistant to these perturbants form a system accessible to both genetic and physical-biochemical techniques.

Now, more than likely, these guys would grow so slowly in normal conditions that reducing the amount of ethanol present would allow wildtype bacteria to regain dominance.  Just saying though, it is possible to get ethanol resistance.
