I know its the camel's nose under the tent, but 23,000 is statistically noise, which is why this doesnt get more play.  LIke silo123 and PluckYew pointed out, we're doing it to ourselves.  I fear that 23,000 will be 230,000 soon, and by then itll be too late to do much about it.

But there's no such thing as evolution!!1!

On a serious note, as a comparison, in the US 33,561 people died in car accidents in 2012.

I agree with all of these except #4.  Hand sanitizers are alcohol based, which destroys everything inside a bacteria cell at once.
They can't ever build a resistance to it.

Purell isn't an antibiotic.  It's an alcohol gel, essentially a brute force sanitization method.  As such, I'm not particularly concerned about it.  Everything else is right on.

/soap and water work just as well.

On the one hand, 60 minutes blows up everything into a conspiracy to get the little guy.  On the other hand, this sounds entirely plausible, since new antibiotics wouldn't be widely deployed but held in reserve to deal with serious cases, making them not very profitable.

Do you understand what germ resistance is? Hitting bugs with antibiotics doesn't make them more deadly or harder for your immune system to kill.

Any method you use to kill germs that does not kill every last one of them creates a strain that that particular method is just a bit less effective at killing. Because they're all descended from the ones that didn't get killed in the first round.

Repeated exposure to ethanol wouldn't make a bug that is hard or impossible to kill, thus dooming us all. It'd make a bug that is hard or impossible to kill with ethanol.

There is one problem.  The school looks at you kinda weird if you haven't taken your kid to see a health professional for anything except shots and you can't remember their doctor's name.

It's not that they don't get sick, it's just that we don't run to the doctor to get a 10 day course of antibiotics for a disease that typically is fought off in 7-10 days or less.

Mostly this, although the real argument against the Purell is it's not a replacement for hand-washing, but people treat it as such. It's not very effective if your hands are dirty and not very effective against viruses.

What you've listed is minor compared to antibiotics in the food supply.

And that. It's disturbing that it took us so long to realize that regularly doping healthy animals with the same antibiotics we use for people might lead to some problems. It's not like we haven't been aware of antibiotic resistance since shortly after penicillin first became widely used.

Yes it will, most ear infections are bacterial

Yes, and ear infections typically resolve in the same amount of time with or without antibiotics. Treat the discomfort and if it persists, THEN see a doctor. Prescribing antibiotics is often irresponsible and doctors should hold public health in a higher regard.

Another thing - let your kids go outside and let them get dirty. Like every day even.. Let them go barefoot, let them eat dirt, let them get cuts and scrapes and boo boos. Let them camp out in the backyard without doing a backyard sweep first. Give their immune systems a workout.

Quit keeping them in perfectly air-conditioned, humidified, air-controlled environments and then wondering why they can't so much as go outside six months of the year without an inhaler and allergy meds. Not knocking those who really have asthma but some of these precious little snow flakes can't so much as get winded by a good walk without mummy & daddy running for some oxygen.

Let the housework go a little. Everything does not have to be spotless. That day old cookie your two-year-old just ate from under the couch? They're not going to die. Let it go.

Let it go already. Being too clean is killing us. There's a difference between clean and sterile.

Yeah, but Serious Post is correct. "Alcohol kills germs within seconds by physically destroying the cell membrane and denaturing proteins within the bacteria." That's not how antibiotics work, therefor ethanol does not carry a risk of creating "superbugs"

It's not an antibiotic and wouldn't contribute to stronger or resistant bacteria.

It may reduce your exposure to (mostly harmless) bacteria which is debatably a bad thing (hygiene hypothesis)

It won't keep you from getting sick most of the time.
Alcohol doesn't kill Norovirus, the most common cause of the stomach "flu." And the cold and flu are usually caught by touching an infected surface and then touching your nose or eyes rather than your mouth. So using hand sanitizer before you eat but after you've spent hours in public touching who-knows-what and rubbing your eyes or scratching your nose is less effective at keeping you healthy than you might think.

Not really. Ethanol is like fire for germs. They don't become resistant. If they didn't die, they didn't get exposed enough.

It's hard but not impossible to get ethanol resistant bugs:

http://jb.asm.org/content/114/1/239.short
The effects of ethanol on the growth of a wild-type  Escherichia coli K-12 are described. These effects include a reduction of the steady-state growth rate and an interference with the division process. They appear as an immediate response to the addition of ethanol and are rapidly reversed by removal of ethanol. Mutants were selected that could grow at a concentration of ethanol that stopped wild-type growth. The growth of one of the mutants we studied (strain S9L100) is stimulated by the presence of ethanol, methanol, or dimethyl sulfoxide. This strain exhibits pleiotropic growth defects including abnormal cell division and morphology. It also appears to have an altered  lac permease function which is not due to a mutation in the  Y gene itself. We conclude that this mutant has an altered membrane and that the membrane defect may be the cause of the abnormal growth properties. The use of compounds which serve as general membrane perturbants and mutants resistant to these perturbants form a system accessible to both genetic and physical-biochemical techniques.

Now, more than likely, these guys would grow so slowly in normal conditions that reducing the amount of ethanol present would allow wildtype bacteria to regain dominance.  Just saying though, it is possible to get ethanol resistance.

Keep on using those antibiotics until you've bred 'em big as a mouse. Then you can just step on them. Problem solved. You'll be able to see an infection before it gets anywhere near you.

Kuta: AxemRed: I have some comments about Purell too...

THIS.

And ehtanol kills bacteria. So you are saying it's not an antibiotic because it's not from a pharma company?

ProTip: Maybe you need to back off calling other people stupid until you stop saying stupid crap in public.

Yeah, but Serious Post is correct. "Alcohol kills germs within seconds by physically destroying the cell membrane and denaturing proteins within the bacteria." That's not how antibiotics work, therefor ethanol does not carry a risk of creating "superbugs"

And all the guts spill out. It's known as "lysing", hence the "Lys" in Lysol. The "ol" comes from phenol, the active ingredient, which aslo lyses cells.

Antibitiocs can be taken internally; 70% isopropyl alchohol cannot
Some antibiotics are only bacteriostatic, they merely slow growth, on purpose. Antiseptics like alcohol are usually bactericidal. They kill, on purpose.

From what I have heard it isn't that it breeds the superbugs it just makes people more vulnerable to bacteria so they get sick (and use antibiotics) more often.

From what I have actually read (thoroughly) washing your hands is just as effective, and the jury is kind of out on whether or not the use of ant-bacterial is a good or a bad thing when it comes to superbugs:

Yeah, one case where promoting `tolerance' isn't indicated unless, of course, one is designing a new class of systemic AB's.  The use of growth promoters (sic) in commercial poultry production isn't always owing to the poultry producer's avarice ('suppress the Campylobacter! the chickens grow uniformly and fewer will spill intestinal contents during the automated gutting process!' - FDA said... `forget it, knock off the Baytril' Bayer had a sad, but only in U.S.).  In  the Czech Republic, waste water from a commercial chicken operation was tested.  Breakdown product of the banned antibiotic Nitrofurasone was ID'ed.  Poultry producer hadn't been using the drug(s).  Further testing revealed the source of the chemical was from human use (flushed all around the system - so to speak).  The humans were contaminating the poultry.  EPA has a nice `personal products' page to gander at.

/Oxine is good for surfaces that require abiotic `exactitude'

I freaking loved that game.  I sailed through all the levels until Zombie... came close a few times but just could not close the deal.  Freaking Greenland was so damned hard to (1) infect and (2) make it spread that I'd have to spend all my points making that happen and not have enough left over to fight the special containment teams they'd set up.  I tried every attack variation I could think of.

Then I started getting unsolicited ad-texts from them on my phone, even with the app killed.  So I deleted it.
