Don't feel bad, it's not just United.  The whole industry is like that.

The pilot union does like to state the obvious doesn't it?

So, the pilots are saying a lawyer does not make the best person to run an airline?

But they do such a great job in Congress and the White House.

Well, the difference is that congresspeople/presidents are responsible for making laws so it's actually not completely unreasonable that the people who make laws should know something about, y'know, laws.

If a lawyer is smart and has a good management team and/or advisors, I don't expect them to do a terrible job at running a company, either (at least no worse than other crappy CEOs these days), but I think personally I'd prefer someone with industry and/or management experience running a major airline if it were up to me. Which it's not.

I'm pretty sure there are F5 tornadoes that do less turning around than United Airlines has done.

A few lawyers, maybe, but wouldn't it be great if just a handful of them had any clue about the things they're making laws *about*?

That's a fair point, but there are different areas of law that require expertise in various "real world" areas such as business law, tax law, criminal law, employment law, etc. So not all of them are exacty know-nothings. What *might* be nice is if they cared a little more about representing the interests of Joe Littleleaguecoach in middle America than the interests of their rich corporate donors. And, I agree, there are many dumb politicians and lawyers who should try to understand what they are opining about before writing laws about it.

At least United under Tilton treated elites well. The couple of years I was a 1K were awesome. Smisek brought in the Continental attitude of "you got there eventually, so shut the fark up."
