When Ann Heppermann booked an appointment with Ms. Shea to have her hair cut short a couple of months ago, she immediately turned to Google's image search for inspiration. "I thought, 'I'm 39, I shouldn't be looking at pictures of Jennifer Lawrence,' " said Ms. Heppermann, a radio producer in Greenpoint.

Instead, she decided to look at pictures of ...

Just because the author's husband/wife doesn't like her short haircut does not mean she's doing something against the crowd to get it done. Uberdeity doesn't like my hair short either, but you don't see me being all "girl power! I'm fighting the man, takin' back my rib, and bein' independent. Join me my sisters!" when I get it cut. It's more like a "I think I look nice. My hair has fewer split ends. And, it's easier to manage and style." Who knew that as a working mother, I don't have time to spend the hours it takes using a soft brush root to end and brushing in conditioners to keep my long hair nice.

No seriously. I met a woman once with beautiful hair so long it could trail the ground. No splits, no frizzes. I asked her how she managed it. Hours of soft brushing and special conditioners.

Short hair on women goes against Bible and natural order of things "Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering" 1 Corinthians 11:3-15

In our culture, you have to have the right head-to-neck ratio to pull off a pixie cut, or even a bob to a lesser extent. Long neck and a smaller, oval shaped face, it can look damn sexy. Think Audrey Hepburn. Also helps if the rest of you is on the thin side, but not required.

If you have a particularly round head, wide cheeks, and/or a short neck, and are short and round yourself, the only favor you are doing yourself is being cooler in the summer and saving on shampoo.

/from an amateur portrait photographer point of view anyway

* Lesbian
* Young child that won't stop grabbing and pulling and/or trying to eat hair

Hey - if women want to make themselves ugly I guess that is their problem.

I can't think of a single woman who was hotter with short hair than long hair.  It almost always makes them less attractive.

Short hair is for older women who just don't want the maintenance anymore and have given up.

Almost universally women look better with long hair. Even the super cute little women with cute little hair cuts would probably look better with longer hair. Only a very select group of women can pull off short hair.

Basically its for lazy women and women who have given up on looking good and the occasional "trying to be bold but really just hurting their own beauty" trendoids.

Kate gosselin popularized her style and tons of women tried it. Then she grew her hair out and she was ten times hotter.

Man, there was a guy in my HS who rocked a two foot tall, straight up mohawk.  Used glue to hold it up.  Died it crazy colors.  The girls freakin loved it too.

Then the faux-hawk became trendy, guys spent 30 seconds in the morning throwing wax in their hair and his ho-entourage scooted over to the dark side.

Point is, I think the only people who care this much about hair are still in high school.

I have thick hair. When it shiats me, I cut it off.

A couple of years ago, it shiat me. So I cut it off. And then very quickly, women started hitting on me and alot of guys assumed I was a lesbian (this is the first time I've been single with a pixie).

I started growing it back in about September last year. The teasing from my friends has been relentless and brutal. Due to my masculine jawline and the current state of my hair, my friends are referring to me as the Beebs.

And fark that about short hair being less maintenance - its way more maintenance. To keep it looking decent you need to get haircuts every six - eight weeks. When my hair was long, I could easily go 6 -12 months without a hairdresser going near it.

I cut my hair after our second child was born, eventually to a short bob/not quite a pixie. It was actually more difficult to maintain & style than long hair. I'm back to long hair and will never cut more than the split ends again. Long hair has near-infinite styling options while being incredibly easy to maintain. Eat well, drink lots of water, and use good products.

Amongst the female naval officers I know (my wife is a Navy nurse, so I know plenty), this phenomenon is known as "the Commander Cut." Once a woman hits O-5, something clicks I their heads and their hair gets lopped into a bob.

Not sure if it's a compulsion or a having thing, but I haven't met one yet that hasn't done it.

There's a million women at my job that cut it super short around 40 and basically goto into "I don't care how I look" mode for the rest of their lives. Even after divorces. They're just done with trying to look good. Its kind of an amazing phenomenon really.

Meh. Do whatever makes you happy. But I don't find short hair on women to be attractive. I like long hair. It is always an individualized thing for each person, but in general I prefer hair to be down to the middle of her back. Bob, pixie, and other short cuts just aren't attractive to me. Yay for doing whatever you personally want. That can be a nice, attractive personality feature. But as a physical feature, no. Halle Berry, Emma Watson, et al all look better with long hair.

On the subject of women's hair, blond doesn't do it for me either. For me, it's

natural red>dyed unnatural colors>black>brown>>>>>blond>>>>>bleach blond

As an aside, women that I have been close with who did have long hair damn near never wore it down. It was always pulled back tight or otherwise kept high and immobile. A big part of long hair's attraction is when it's able to flow and move. If she's on bending over, leaning, on top of me, etc I want it to fall around her. Having shoulder-plus length hair but always keeping it tied up and high kinda defeats the point of having it. If having long hair is so burdensome to you that you never keep it at full length then just cut it to the length that you do keep it at.

Her facial structure really lends itself well to short hair. I don't think it would work quite as well now, with her lips being larger. Hackers era Angelina Jolie is best Angelina Jolie.

Luckily for her the compulsion somehow went away on its own. I attribute it to her getting me out of her life and marrying a normal male of the species.

I think I have that condition, but I'm over 50 so there's plenty of hair in my nose and ears to keep my compulsion busy 24x7.  It's a never ending battle.  I'm fully convinced that there's something in a middle-aged man's ear wax that causes rampant hair growth.  If you could harvest that stuff, you could cure baldness forever!  Of course, it'd cover your head in short wiry hairs, but a tennis ball is better than a cue ball.

1) I am quite short. I really don't think short women look good with long hair. 2) I am impatient and, therefore, lack the patience to grow it out or, if I did grow it out, to deal with long hair. 3) I'm middle-aged now and don't care. 4) My hair used to be very thick but it isn't any more.

The way I figure it is it doesn't matter.  From personal experience young women with short hair have had some sort of traumatic incident where their hair was used against them.  Such as held down and by their hair while being raped.  So they keep it short so it cannot happen again.

Middle aged women don't need to be attractive anymore so they go short for ease of care and as a subconscious statement to the world that they're no longer willing to find a man regardless of whether or not they're married.

Old women can't afford that much blue dye for long hair

Here's the problem with the "no cherry picking" rule: it would have to apply to all cultural/social phenomena in order to be consistent (and thus avoid being a cherry picked rule against cherry picking), and in doing so it would basically shut down all of religion, culture, law, and science. It would necessarily lead to a static, ultra-orthodox way of life, and would defeat the very purpose of culture, which allows humans to be flexible, to negotiate, and to adapt.

Also, short hair is hot on some women... but not everybody has a face for it.

Short hair can be tough to pull off for some women, but some can do it well.  But the one hair cut that a number of women get that I tend to think of as "short" but I'm not really sure how to quantify it, is that cut that some women get when the back is very short, then the sides are tapered downward at a sharp angle toward the chin, where the bangs are essentially allowed to grow down to the bottom.  I do not understand how most women can find that style attractive... it looks hideous on most of the women that I have seen it on.

We all have our personal preferences. While you're welcome to say you don't personally like short hair on women, I don't get how it follows that those women have given up on being attractive...

Some of us just like having short hair. Long hair just hangs off my head in a lank waterfall with ears peeking out, short hair emphasises my neck and my clavicles, and makes my head look a nicer shape.

Also, short hair can be more work so it's not just laziness either.

But you know, you might not like short hair, that's okay. My hair is not about you.

kukukupo: Hey - if women want to make themselves ugly I guess that is their problem.

I can't think of a single woman who was hotter with short hair than long hair.  It almost always makes them less attractive.

Short hair is for older women who just don't want the maintenance anymore and have given up.

And then exploiting it for money.

shamanwest: No seriously. I met a woman once with beautiful hair so long it could trail the ground. No splits, no frizzes. I asked her how she managed it. Hours of soft brushing and special conditioners.

I have such a fetish for long hair that when I see someone with it (like waist-length) it's all I can do to not go over and touch it. Which would probably get me arrested.

I used to work with a guy who was so astonishingly good-looking that I couldn't keep my eyes off of him, even though I wasn't really into him THAT way. Very nice guy too. One day he mentioned that he used to have hair to his waist (he's part native American). I thought "Holy shiat, you wouldn't have been safe around me then, even if I didn't have the hots for you."

Miss5280: I'm an over 40 woman with long hair - almost touches my bra strap. I love it. The men I date love it. It's curly so I can blow it out smooth or air dry it and leave it curly and bouncy.
I do spend a small fortune on maintenance: good products, good tools, good stylist, good color, etc. Totally worth it. Why not present the world the best version of yourself?
So, see? Not all "middle aged" women (what's middle aged these days???) have given up and don't care about looking good or being attractive to men.

I'm over 50 and have long hair. Not long enough, alas, but as long as I can grow it.
I don't spend a penny on it. So sometimes it's pretty and sometimes it not, but it's long. Baseball cap with the ponytail thru it works too, since I usually work outdoors.

/was going to say something about kate Gosselin, but I see it's been well-covered.

IMHO the women-folk look better on average with long hair. Short hair can certainly work but long hair is appealing.

What I find crazy is how attached women can be to their hair. My wife has been known to cry after a bad haircut. When I get a bad haircut I make a mental note not to go back to that barber but I usually forget who it was by the next haircut anyways. It's just hair. It grows right back. I suppose if I had years invested in my hair I'd care about it, but that's never going to happen. Crew cut means that washing and drying my hair takes 60 seconds a day, tops.

Englebert Slaptyback: mekki

Also, some women look better with shorter hair. They have the cheekbones, long necks and eyes to pull it off.

Halle Berry and Angelina Jolie look amazing irrespective of hair length, so there is no real difference between the long/short states. It's the same with Winona Ryder.

But look at Dana Delany.

IMO she looks MUCH better with long hair.

Unfortunately for your point, she also looks like she's much older in the long hair pic.

it's just hair, not a f*cking social statement of rebellion against the goddamn patriarchy.

That would have been a valuable comment, had the pictures been of Sinead O'Connor instead of Demi Moore.

Boxingoutsider: Almost universally women look better with long hair.

Actually as you get older and hormon changes your hair actually gets finer and loses its bounce and fullness.  Making your hair shorter gives an appearance of fuller hair for longer.

So women who let their hair stay long and bedraggled looking thin and without life don't care.  Many women who cut it shorter do so to improve the appearance.

The body changes as you age.

You, if you live long enough and no one kills you for being an arsehole, will find this out for yourself.

Looks like the agreement is that long hair is better - on the head anyway!

Can't argue with results.

LavenderWolf: PunGent: LewDux: Short hair on women goes against Bible and natural order of things "Does not nature itself teach you that if a man wears long hair it is a disgrace for him, but if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering" 1 Corinthians 11:3-15

I suspect you're kidding, but imho, people who ACTUALLY conflate "the Bible" and "the natural order of things" should be legally required to get all their medical care from Biblically-approved providers.  And they will be stoned to death if caught in cotton-poly blends.

When I'm emperor, there will only be one rule regarding religions:  No cherry picking.

PenGent for Emperor!

My rule will be a benevolent one.

When I'm emperor, there will only be one rule regarding religions:  No cherry picking.

No, no...I'd just single out religion for my rule.

Do I need to remind you exactly WHO is emperor in my hypothetical?

/agreed, not every woman has the face for short hair, just like lots of women look way better in tank-top suits rather than bikinis.
