I've read the article a couple of times now and I'm not sure how subby got California and Michigan confused with each other.

[he] was stopped on Interstate 94 by Michigan State Police in 2011

His only previous brush with the law was in Mexico, he said, when he was reproached for "taking motion pictures of a prostitute."

It was a lot harder to be discreet back then.

89? I say let him go. When you reach a certain age some laws just shouldn't be applied to you.

FTA:  "It was kind of a bad decision to make at this time of life," U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds  said last fall when Sharp pleaded guilty to participating in the scheme to distribute more than 1,400 pounds of drugs that originated in Arizona.

I would say he picked the best time to go big like that.

Nice, but no. I really think the best way to cripple drug cartels is to devalue their product into nothingness.

I remember a story from years ago of some guy that needed end of life care, but didn't have any close relatives, or hated them, or whatever.  He tried to rob some place, and when caught, ended up in the prison hospital.  I'm not sure it ever even went to trial, he was in pretty bad shape.  I think he just pled guilty.

I'm not saying this guy is doing the same thing, but it wouldn't surprise me.

At that age, maybe all he wanted was to "have a Coke and a Smile."

Michigan State Police was clearly out of jurisdiction here. Charges dropped.

Also, not only is he a war hero, he also doesn't rely on government handouts for his retirement. Give this bootstrappy man another medal!

Being a WWII vet doesn't mean you're not a criminal, just like being any sort of Vet does not make you a criminal.  Similarly, age means little.

What short story was that? Graham Greene? A man and his wife on vacation in South Pacific go to see a blue film and it turns out that the husband is the male lead? Was that him?

If anything, seeing the horrors of war tend to desensitize a person to what is "right" and "wrong" in relation to the rest of humanity.  After burning somebody alive and hearing their screams grow quieter and quieter as the life is evaporated out of their body in the most horrific way imaginable, do you really give a fark about recreational drugs?

Old folks have been trending towards more muling and smuggling over the last decade.

Also the first arrest is often wrist-slappy so they can make a few bucks and then get out of it. I fully intent to check into detroit river smuggling upon retirement ;).

I can agree and disagree with this. If(which is never) drugs become legal, cartels will go to something else that is illegal. Like human trafficking. You wanna make that legal too?
