The only thing that could make that law more awesome is if they could/would extend it to alcohol as well.  If you are pregnant and smoking a joint, then you are an asshole and you don't deserve your kids or your freedom.

Sounds like Gov. Bill Haslam is encouraging women of mostly color to travel more if they have any sort of addiction and instead of seeking treatment to have an abortion instead if they want to avoid up to a 15 year jail sentence.
• In 2011, 96% of Tennessee counties had no abortion clinic. 63% of Tennessee women lived in these counties.
Sounds like the Tennessee antiabortion  groups only want to support certain types of women to give birth and undesirables to have an abortion or go to prison.

Has there been any link between marijuana use and birth abnormalities? I'll wait for you to look it up.

BTW, MJ is not a narcotic to which, according to this article, the law applies.

There is actually a lot of research that links marijuana use to birth abnormalities.  So much, in fact, that you need to provide some research that establishes it isn't the case before anyone will take you seriously.  Other than that, I am not sure how much more I have to say to someone who cares more about the right to get f*cked up than they do about a child's right to its health.

It would be possible for research to take place if President Obama did not think pot is just as bad a heroin. Lacking the ability to sign a piece of paper changing the DEA schedule of pot to any other schedule  that allows research it will not be known anytime soon. I do not know why President Obama hates science when it could possible effect his party negatively but help the US.

Let me guess, you are one of those "MJ cures everything and it is big pharma keeping it hidden, man" types, right? MJ is mostly harmless (and far less harmful than cigs or alcohol), but there is a boatload of information about MJ being bad while pregnant. You can find it by using this website called google instead of asking others to look it up for you   http://lmgtfy.com/?q=marijuana+while+pregnant

as far as i know, drinking and smoking (in moderation) will have no ill effects on the bebe.

in fact, some studies have shown that pregnant lady alcohol drinking resulted in healthier babies than teetotaling pregnant ladies.  (some italian study over 20 years and thousands of people, looking at the babies' developments for decades).  i think the healthiest babies were 4 glasses of wine a week, never more than 1 a day.

there are intelligent people in Tennessee, but our state government is pants on the head retarded

2014-04-30 03:27:58 PM
So Tennessee has decided to enact the following huh?
Axiom: At least 50% of fertilized eggs die due to non-implantation or other biological problems which prevent growth.

Axiom: An undefined, but nonzero, percentage of those deaths are caused by acts or omissions on the part of the mother, such as poor nutrition, drug use, or risky physical behaviors

Conclusion 1: Thus, to prevent the taking of innocent life, all pregnant women must be prevented from engaging in acts or omissions which may lead to the death of the fertilized egg.

Axiom: An undefined, but nonzero, percentage of women of childbearing age are pregnant for a period of time prior to their knowledge of this fact

Conclusion: ALL women of childbearing age must be subject to Conclusion 1 above

Corollary: As the legal system provides protection to born children, laws should be passed enforcing Conclusion 1 above.

Corollary: As medical science cannot, at present, remove a fertilized egg from a woman and grow it in a laboratory, the laws from the above corollary can not rely on present standards which would strip parental rights from a neglectful mother (we can't take the baby out of her by force). Thus, the legal force must revolve around imprisonment and forcible subjection to medical care based on the needs of the fetus.

Necessary conclusions based on the above:

• No woman of childbearing age should be allowed, under law, to smoke cigarettes.
• No woman of childbearing age should be allowed, under law, to drink alcohol
• No woman of childbearing age should be allowed, under law, to maintain an unhealthy weight
• No woman of childbearing age should be allowed, under law, to engage in body-contact sports
• No woman of childbearing age should be allowed, under law, to engage in dangerous sports of any kind
• No woman of childbearing age should be allowed, under law, to consume any drug, whether legally prescribed or not, which has been shown to have teratogenic, mutagenic, or fetotoxic effects, even to save her life.
• All women of childbearing age should be forced to take a pregnancy test every month, with results reported to the state, so that early pregnancies may be monitored by agents of the state
• All pregnant women should be forced to follow a medically prudent schedule of prenatal care, and should be forced, under penalty of imprisonment or other punishments, to abide by any rules given to her by her state-licensed obstetrician.

This is pretty much always true in all the alcohol studies looking at every type of health. I imagine it's because the people who have ONE glass of wine a day are getting a little relaxing stress relief, and aren't so stressed that they'd drink more than that. People who drink more or less than that are probably under more stress. I also have a theory that teetotallers are natural worriers, which is why they don't drink, and why they're less healthy than moderate drinkers.

This sounds like the kind of thing that's used in campaigns to give the appearance of saving babies and getting tough on crime rather than solving an actual problem.

In practice, it will be used by family members and babby daddys to try and mess with pregnant women and legally will be a he-said/she-said shiatshow.

Dr Dreidel: Lucky LaRue: The only thing that could make that law more awesome is if they could/would extend it to alcohol and cigarettes as well.  If you are pregnant and smoking a joint, then you are an asshole and you don't deserve your kids or your freedom.

Can we also add "eating sushi", "getting a table massage" and the billion other things they recommend pregnant women not do?

How about 100% taxpayer-funded health insurance/care for pregnant women, if we're so concerned with their health and wellbeing?

// this is Tennessee, where alcohol and tobacco may as well have seats in the legislature
// not as bad as VA or NC, but close

You can eat sushi with cooked ingredients, not sashimi.
Table massages are allowed up until third trimester.
