I don't know how many films I saw him in before I realized he was british. Very, very good actor.

Alphax: Damn.  71 isn't that old anymore.

He had Parkinson's.  He retired in 2011.

Long Good Friday may be the best English mob movie, and that's saying something (it's a small genre but almost all the films are amazing).

When I go, I want the cause to be "Farked to death by Jessica".

Great, great character actor. He could be totally sweet, or a complete and utter bastard. You will be missed, sir.

Yes, but how did he die?

He did some rather impressive tv versions of The Lost World and Don Quixote that I watched recently.

2014-04-30 09:03:29 AM
How odd. Yesterday I was watching an interview with him and Ian Dury (also dead), probably from the '90s.

The IRA cashed out their Harold Shand.

If there were any roles he was bad in, I have no recollection of them. RIP.

Woulda liked to see him in something by Guy Ritchie, maybe another Sherlock sequel. Or at least another Luc Besson movie.

Ah well, I can dream...

"The Cotton Club" was a bad movie, but I thought he was really good as Owney Madden.

I hope he had his 27b/6 form filled out.  RIP, funny guy.

So I was apparently the third, then.  Jesus, that's a great mob movie and Hoskins is just about perfect in it.  And worth seeing for a ridiculously young Pierce Brosnan!

What, you need more?  OK, how about 1979 Helen Mirren?

Also a necessary Hoskins movie is Mona Lisa, which is just a heartbreaker.

I'm a huge fan of the Brit crime thrillers too, and "Good Friday" is right up there with "Get Carter" and etc. I'm always surprised when I meet another fan who hasn't seen it, it's been sadly overlooked here in the U.S.

I love the way he played Pink's manager in The Wall.  One of my favorite scenes is when they burst into Pink's hotel room and Bob looks around and exclaims "Fark me".

The first British actor whose American accent did not sound like a bad John Wayne immitation.

My favourite bob hoskins story is how he made a shiatload of money by not being in the Untouchables movie. He had a pay or play contract and they signed him thinking they wouldn't be able to get Deniro. Then when Deniro became available they signed him and had to pay Hoskins what he would have been paid to be in the movie anyways.

Came here to add my name to the long list of people fondly recalling Long Good Friday and Mona Lisa.

If memory serves -- and these days it rarely does -- Mona Lisa was also the second Neil Jordan film I saw, which is another good reason to see it.
