I refuse to believe that anything else in the Star Wars universe exists except IV, V, and VI.

Also, Luke and Leia aren't siblings, and they end up together. And I ride off into the sunset with Indiana Jones Han Solo.

I'm no SW geek, but I once read that a few decades after the fall of Palpatine (literally), the New Republic was going to be invaded by an ultra-religious race from outside the galaxy. Sort of a cross between the Covenant and the Jem'Hadar.

Or did that get un-canon'd in the Great Disney Continuity Purge?

Came to say the exact same thing.  I've seen nothing but butthurt surrounding SW VII so far.

And I don't get it at all.  There's no reason to think it's going to go one way or the other.  There's no trailer, no script, nothing except the cast list.  I don't get why people are butthurt about JJ Abrams either --- his recent Trek movies were basically Star Wars films, and they were quite good if you view them in that light.  Disney's done a good job recently of making movies that are reasonably enjoyable for adults while also entertaining kids (who have always been a core demographic for Star Wars).  Oh, and did I mention that George Lucas isn't involved?

There's literally nothing concrete that would indicate this movie will be bad.  I predict that at worst it'll be entertaining and forgettable.

You're thinking of the Yuzhan Vong (sp?).  And I'm guessing they did, since they were a part of the extended universe.  I doubt they'll be a part of the upcoming film.

/the actual Jem'Hadar in SW would actually be pretty cool

Anyone who thinks Abrams was doing Star Wars in his Trek films has no idea what either of those franchises were. What he did and will continue to do is dilute the concept into a generic pastiche that "eveyone" can enjoy. That crap will make some money at the beginning, but as that return will keep diminishing as the series moves along. Tha

Nerdgasm?

HMS_Blinkin: I've seen nothing but butthurt surrounding SW VII so far. And I don't get it at all. There's no reason to think it's going to go one way or the other.

I'm not disappointed; my expectations are low and so far they've met them.  What little we have seen is certainly meh, including this announcement.  Can Abrams entertain?  Sure, if you know what to expect, and Abrams has been in the business a long time so we know what to expect.  The Star Trek movies were financially successful, but they were incredibly dumb.  They were dumb from start to finish, and the dumbness almost never lets up.  That'll work better for Star Wars which has no legacy of challenging its audience, but I'd say the fanbois who came of age with Empire Strikes Back are doomed.

The cast is similarly meh.  Bring back the old cast because Abrams is allergic to originality.  Otherwise a bunch of white people, a token black guy, a token female. . . the message is clear:  We are not taking risks people.  We're going by the book.  The Hollywood Book on Culturally Inoffensive But Profitable Action Blockbusters for White Men.  A book that's certainly served Hollywood well, though its spine is just about ready to fall off from overuse.

It's the "meh" heard 'round the world.  No, there's nothing that indicates it will be bad, but we've already got evidence of steadfast determination that this is not going to be anything brilliant, assuming anyone was dumb enough to expect that at this point.

That's certainly not a nerdgasm, but I wouldn't call it butthurt either.  More like. . . I just can't feel anything.  I'm about as excited as when I'm waiting for Chipotle to finish making my burrito.  Will I enjoy the result?  Sure, but only because I know exactly what I'm getting -- something fast, cheap and familiar.

I have to say I love that Andy Serkis gets full co-starring credit in movies for playing roles like Gollum and Ceasar, even though we never see Serkis himself on the screen (well, for a moment in LOTR he was Smeagol, but that's different). The guy wearing the mo-cap suit or serving as the template for rotoscoping used to be tossed into the technical credits. Serkis has taken that to the level of being worthy of acting awards and recognition as a serious actor... And that's just awesome.

He's also quite good when he's on screen in his own skin, too. Burke & Hare  was enjoyable.

dragonchild: That'll work better for Star Wars which has no legacy of challenging its audience, but I'd say the fanbois who came of age with Empire Strikes Back are doomed.

Obviously.  Great series always have to compete with "how we remember them."  People look through incredibly rose-colored lenses at their first exposures to Star Wars and Star Trek.  For example, ESB was great, but the reality is that if you were to show it to me for the first time as an adult, it wouldn't get me as excited or fire up my imagination in the same way that it did when I first watched it as a 9-year-old.

This new Star Wars won't have the same effect on my as the first time I watched the original trilogy on VHS, but that's as much because the viewer is different as because the movie content will be different.

dragonchild: We're going by the book.  The Hollywood Book on Culturally Inoffensive But Profitable Action Blockbusters for White Men.

You mean the Book of Star Wars?  Because everything you described was also true of ALL 6 existing Star Wars movies.  Are you really surprised that Star Wars is going to look and feel like Star Wars?  Humans like familiarity.  All the ancient Greek tragedies followed very similar plot structures and drew from the same cast of characters, because it was easier for audiences to place the stories in context that way.  Even Star Trek relies pretty heavily on familiar themes and rules from series to series, so that new stuff can be introduced more gradually.

dragonchild: That's certainly not a nerdgasm, but I wouldn't call it butthurt either.

You must have missed yesterday's threads here on Fark.  There were heaps and heaps of butthurt.  To reiterate: I'm not expecting greatness, but I'm expecting entertainment that will be authentically "Star Wars," and that will get the next generation of kids excited about Star Wars.  That's not a tall order.

I think it's interesting that they got the guy who played the Joker in the movie. You'd think it would be someone from the Marvel universe, since Disney owns both Star Wars and Marvel. Still, it's an interesting crossover concept.

That would follow in line with Lucas' lack of originality.

"They blew up the the Death Star, now what?"
"I know, a SECOND Death Star!"

"They killed the emperor, now what?"
"I know, a clone of the Emperor!"

I know a guy who wears stormtrooper outfits in a kind of traveling legion for conventions and parades.  That's his career.  He's the last of his kind -- those who give a crap about what Star Wars does.  Any further movies are basically at subsistence blockbuster level now.  The wonder is gone.

My son will be 5 when this comes out. I'm sure he'll be excited, he'll want the toys for Christmas and I'll take him to see it in the theater at least once.

I was three when I saw the first one and can still recall seeing it several times in the theater. If my son can experience some of that excitement, then I'll be excited for the movies.

Hoping he grows a couple inches so I can take him on "Star Tours" when we go to Disneyland this summer.
