Nothing like a good old fashioned land war to get you out of one, eh Putin?

Russia is in recession...officially

Saturn is in the house of the moon, Jupiter is aligned with Mars, and the Pleiades are singing backup.

why haven't we given away their G8 spot to China or Brazil. Both have larger economies than Russia. Both of those countries have larger economies than several G7 members. Allowing either one to join in Russia's place would make that country happy that they've turned Russia's loss into their own win and it will annoy the Ruskies.

True enough, it was the greatness of Ronald Reagan and Jesus from on high that brought down the Soviet Union. Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter had nothing at all to do with it nor that whole 'Containment' thing or that 'Cold War' thing.

Yeah, but at least Putin doesn't wear mom jeans!

This is proof that sanctions don't work. The newest sanctions were just announced, but Russia's had negative economic growth for two quarters in a row now.

Thanks, Obama.

Considering TFA notes their problems started before the Crimea incident and that these forecasts are a continuation, I'd say you're right.

Also, the article reads exactly like the west is trying to talk Russia into a recession, the same way the left did for the 89-90 US recession. I approve if the strategy, as it's effective and nonviolent, but in neither case are any kind of sanctions responsible for the result.

No, it shows how powerful they are.  The Russian economy was reacting to the sanctions long before they were put into place.

Scorched earth doesn't work so well against economic sanctions.

Once again the feckless and weak Obama though his weakness and fecklessness has allowed the attractive and masculine Putin to get the upper-hand.  This Russian Shirtless Chessmaster is playing on a Civil War chess set from the Franklin Mint while the weak and feckless Obozo is playing Homosexual Checkers which is just like regular Checkers, but gay.

The only question is, Is Oblahblah a weak and feckless leader or the weakest and fecklessest leader?

I see it as an indication of where to hit them. An economy in rescission is a soft spot that we should continue to apply increasing pressure to.

There you go
Still, not as many as before

Screw gay sanctions
We should just put 'boots on the ground' and 'planes in the air' and invade,,,

Watching the chaos in Eastern Ukraine and observing the Russian troops STILL in Crimea. Not too mention the 40k Russian troops on Ukraine's border. What exactly are you defining victory as?

lilbjorn: brandent: Great, because the Jimmy Carter Russian grain embargo worked out so well.

No, I mean the grain embargo the crushed the US farm economy creating permanent damage to us and caused a delay in the collapse of the Soviet Union by nearly a decade by isolating them instead of engaging them in commerce and openness.  It was the openness from glasnost/perestroika and interaction with the West that brought the end, not isolation techniques.  It's widely accepted that the best way to kill communism in various countries is through capitalism.  Isolation is the only reason it persists in NK and Cuba.  China is no longer communist (in name only) due to capitalism.  embargoes are the opposite of capitalism.

So yes if you want to further stir up nationalist tendencies in Russia and increase Putin's grip then by all means we should issue economic sanctions.
