Twitter is the classic late 90s .com.  We'll provide a service everyone will use for free, and we'll figure out how to make money doing it in a decade or two.

Make everyone pay 5 cents per tweet.

I don't understand their business model.

Pets.com made more sense.

"Revenue more than doubled to $250 million from $114 million. Twitter's advertising revenue was $226 million, about 80 per cent of which came
from mobile advertising. "

Ok let me get this straight.  You make $250 million a year yet in one quarter you lost $132 million so, please fix this if I'm being dumb, it costs $500 million to run twitter per year?   Unless you front load all of your networking costs, shouldn't you level out expenditures throughout the year so you don't have to have one amazing quarter per year?

On old boss made me a twitter account a while back, telling me its so great. Then it said I was following Kanye West and I said no thanks and never used it again. While I dont use twitter I like that it exists for entertainment purposes. Celebs, politicians athelets and the like can speak directly to the people. They say stupid things and it makes me feel better about bad decisions I have made.

It helps if you don't think of the $132M as actual cash going out the door, because as I understand it, it is not. That $132M stems from deferred comp and stock calculations.

Also, if revenue was $250M, but they posted a $132M loss, assuming all loss is cash, then that means that expenses are $382M per quarter, which means it would cost about $1.528B to run Twitter throughout the year. Which it obviously does not.

Quite the opposite here; twits should not be given a pulpit.
I would love to see this fail, it makes my skin crawl every time I hear of a reference this service in the news.

First line of the article: "TWITTER booked a net loss in the first quarter because of stock compensation costs "

Answer your question?

So they... scratch that investors lost 132 million not the company (yeah I'm sure the company owns a bunch of stock).  I hate stats like that, tell me what hard dollars they lost in revenue - expenditure.

Investors "lost" $132M like I "lost" ScarJos cell number. Neither of us had it, other than on paper.

yeah that's what is so stupid about it.  It's not like Twitter is out the money it's more like potential money if Twitter dumps every piece of stock it owns which wouldn't be possible anyway.

Same way all the companies that offer a free service do: leverage the data they collect from their users into targeted advertising.

Twitter doesn't own its own stock; the investors in the stock own Twitter.

Twitter paid people in stock, which dilutes investors, which is therefore a paper loss.

All the investors who own Twitter are not going to "dump every piece of stock they own" but some of them are and they have lost some of their share of the company because of the dilution.

How long until Twitter closes its doors? No, wait..  how long until Google.. no... how long until Yahoo! buys them?

The only reason to say everything publicly is either you are promoting a business (running for office?), or you don't care about your long term job prospects. If neither, then you aren't posting anything of value, at which point, people aren't going to follow you.

Maybe the lure of Twitter for the masses is "temporarily 'embarrassed' celebrity syndrome."

I don't want to see them fail, but I can't imagine any reason their current business model is sustainable.

No one cares, I suspect.  Twitter has a huge base of users, and they provide ass-tons of data to mine.  Those things are phenomenally valued, these days.

FTA: For the full year, Twitter expects revenue of $1.2 billion to $1.25 billion, compared with analysts' forecast of $1.24 billion.

Come on Twitter, one day you'll finally make it and be worth the big money -- like WhatsApp.

Twitter has cash coming in (finally), $45 million this quarter. but the firm doesn't pay any tax on it.

Well eBay has just repatriated $9b, which seems like it must be aiming for a pretty big purchase, and Twitter seems like it would probably be that sort of ballpark given the way users for tech companies get priced regardless of whether there is any existing revenue model to support the price.
