Yes, the St. Jude Foundation actually paid for the 21 days of therapy that just ran out, so my niece got that wrong.  The social services person at the facility is working on a few other resources but its not looking good.  It was a shock to find out we couldn't just pay them with plastic and figure out how to pay it off amongst the family.

I filed for SS for him the first week, but I'm told it will take 5-6 months.

Medicare would pay for the PT but he won't qualify for that for 2 years.

He had a hemorrhagic stroke, meaning he bled into his brain.  He can speak reasonably well when he's not tired, but his thoughts are still pretty scrambled.  His right arm and leg are mostly paralyzed; he can kick his leg and swing his arm from the shoulder.

He was a journalist for the LA Times for years, then left that to be a technical writer.  He was between jobs when our mom starting getting sick a lot, so he was taking care of her and our stepdad when this happened.

The stroke happened in March 2014 NOT December 2013.

LineNoise: Why was the site put up in December?

I think they were waiting to see about the insurance and his progress before actually kicking off the fundraiser.

/she's been keeping us updated over the months about his progress

I'm so sorry to hear that. 57, wow. Please know that though, it's a long, grueling road, people can and do make amazing recoveries from brain injuries.

I can't see the details here at work, but I KNOW there are community resources, national organizations, Social Security disabilty, etc., not to mention a number of charities which will help in a crisis, such as Modestneeds.org. When I get to a place where I can do some digging, I'll be glad to do what I can. mmagdalene[nospam-﹫-backwards]krafartlu*com if you can share details about his location, diagnosis, prognosis, and what specific types of therapies and other assistance would be most beneficial right now.

My 57 year-old big brother had a stroke on March 10th.  Although he's improving rapidly he's going to need a lot of expensive physical therapy to recover.  He was unemployed, so MediCal is paying for the nursing facility but they don't cover the PT.

My niece wrote the Tolstoy on the gofundme page.  She means well.
