It sounds like this isn't on the cops, they were responding to a gun call and they did their job.

However:

"It traumatized my kid. He didn't sleep last night, he didn't sleep well at all," said Scott Hansen, whose son was involved in the Nerf gun incident.

It sounds like everyone needs to pull their big boy pants up a little.

Also some people need to accept that they live in a very paranoid society and pulling up beside another car and shooting something at them probably isn't prudent.

Apparently, Bliven is mid-west for asshole.

but do gang members paint their real guns bright orange and yellow to make them appear as toys?

this sounds to me like a bunch of 'get off my lawners' saw kids playing noisily in the street and mavis called blanche and said "if you call the police and say it's guns they have to come and arrest them. I know, I saw it on matlock!"  Because that is the sort of senseless bitter crap that over-privileged boomers do. Same reason they call 911 when they lose their farking car keys. And the cops are jackasses too. Blaming a reaction like this on procedure and the lack of ability to ascertain threat status is SOP these days. They would have said the same thing if they'd shot someone. And it would have been swept away.

So it's dark, you have reports of multiple possible gunmen, you come around the corner and see the above man fitting the description of one of the subjects.

So tell me 20/20 vision, is it a Nerf gun in his hands?

2014-04-29 03:37:36 PM
I remember playing "guns" when I was a kid in the early 1980s. I had an army green M-16 that made ratta-tat sounds when you pulled the trigger, another gun that looked kinda sci-fi and ran on batteries and could do different sound effects, a cap pistol that was bright silver and had a leather holster for my belt, and Megatron, who was a very good approximation of the Walther P-38.  My friends had similar arsenals, and we often swapped guns while playing, and sometimes we'd use those cheap dowel rod canes you can win at county fairs as swords.

Adults thought absolutely nothing of it.  They watched us kids hide in ditches or trees and drop down on our friends making "pow pow" sounds without running to the phone to dial 911.  They didn't see anything at all wrong or weird about it.

I'm pretty sure today we would be locked up as domestic terrorists.

I'm all for keeping kids safe, and having Nerf guns and the like being bright yellow and orange, or even the bright blue and white of the newer lines, should do that just fine.  It's not the kids who are a problem, honestly - let them play.  It's the adults who ought to be fined for wasting police time and resources.

Glad this didn't happen when I was a kid.  Heck, we ran around playing Army and War and assassin tag with real guns (my friend's dad had a non functioning WWII Japanese rifle, for example, and another had an old revolver that had long ago rusted together.  His dad had welded a steel rod in the barrel for extra safety). I was never that lucky to have a real one, so I had to make do with pretty realistic plastic and wood versions.

And no one ever called the cops on us.  We'd walk down main street, to the gas station, to get sodas while we were on game break with them.

If the police can't tell the difference between real guns, and NERF guns, I submit to you that the ENTIRE department should be fired for incompetence...including the chief. If you can't train your officers better than that, then you gotta go, too.

I can confirm this, not once did the cops come never once and we would play until 10, it's because old timey cops In my home town were not twits. We had real looking guns too, they simply were not stupid and acted using reason. Not to say we thought they were our pals but they were able to use reason.

We had farking fireworks.  Bombs.  Cherry bombs.  Smoke bombs.  Black Cats.  Bottle Rockets.  We set up those green plastic army men in the back yard and blew them up with explosives.  We ran the neighborhood unsupervised; rode bikes down creeks and explored storm drains.  Not even in the country, just regular old suburbia.

I can hear the nannies's heads exploding.

2014-04-29 04:07:21 PM
Back in the day (late '70's), we use to hunt our friend Steve with BB guns. He'd bundle up in layers of sweatshirts and a motorcycle helmet, we'd count to 100 as he ran to hide and then we'd go hunting. No one ever stopped us. When we found Steve, we'd unload on him. My dad thought it was funny. Steve's dad thought it was funny. Steve thought he was cool because he was the one being hunted.

This! And where the fark is Wasau anyway? It's not like I have every podunk little shiatville on the map memorized.

And if kids playing in the street is "disorderly conduct" then baby's crying on an airplane has to be "public nuisance/disturbing the peace". And doubly so in a movie theater.

/so there!

2014-04-29 04:30:36 PM
fark people are retarded! What gave away that they were nerf guns i wonder? Could it have been the screamingly bright colors visable from miles away, or was it the barely audible poof noise as these foam darts shot out? People who call the cops on kids with nerf guns and mistake them for real guns need to be steeply fined for wasting everyone's time.

DigitalCoffee: This! And where the fark is Wasau anyway? It's not like I have every podunk little shiatville on the map memorized.

Wausau, about dead center in Wisconsin.  This was at my high school (or was 14 years ago), and I live less than 5 mins from there. :P  One of my friends lives in the neighborhood and saw the police roll up. She said it was pretty intense, guns drawn, yelling through a bullhorn...

Most of the community that is aware of this is pretty solidly in the "WTF?" camp about the person calling it in and the police reaction.

Zachery: Must be nice to live in such a sheltered community that you have no idea what a gunshot sounds like.

It is, actually.  Well, I know what gunshots sound like, but the worst we get is fireworks. :)

YES THEY DO.  It is a common trick, has been done multiple times, and any serious gang enforcement officer in a large city will tell you that they personally treat bright orange and yellow guns as a threat until the handle them in person.  It is one of the "hide in plain sight" type things that will go right past a lot of uninformed people.

And how often have you had a gun pulled on by someone screaming at you?  Is it daily, monthly, yearly, or never happened and you have no idea what it feels like?  It's easy to say crap on here, but have you ever had a gun on you by an angry person?  Or at least had shots fired near you, and not know which direction the bullets are flying?

I have, and now that it's getting warm again, it's killing season again in my city.

2014-04-29 05:47:24 PM
In the early 90's there was this field out where I lived. We would go there with our BB guns and shot bottles and cans. On one side it was boardered by townhomes. I guess one of them saw us there and called the cops on us. Four cops stopped us and they had guns drawn but when they realized they were BB guns they took a few shots and called it a day.

When I was a kid in the late 60's/early 70's we used to grab our pellet guns and bows with arrows and walk a couple miles down a busy street (Navajo for you San Diegans) to Cowles Mountain, which we would then climb, spend an hour or two target shooting, then walk home. No worries.

When I was in my 20's a friend and I used to strap our rifles (30.06 and such) on our backs and take our motorcycles 30 miles east to Pine Valley. No worries.

Nowdays, I worry about Homeland Security busting down my door at 4 AM just because I told you what I used to do.
