zimbach: But anyway, "crisis pregnancy centers" are evil, deceptive scam shops that rightly should be excluded from searches for abortion services. They wouldn't have to be. I think there is room in the world for women who have unplanned pregnancies to seek information and explore options that would allow them to bring the baby to term if they want to, but if that's not what they want, they shouldn't be tricked into it.

Glad I'm not the only one.

And to your point if conservatives wanted to stop unwanted pregnancies rather than just abortions, there would be more pressure for better sex education in public schools.  I can't remember the name of the justice but one of the key votes in Roe v. Wade spent months gathering information on abortion, who got them and why.  His ultimate conclusion was that enough women would find ways to get poorly performed abortions (the subplot in Dirty Dancing) that it was a significant enough women's health issue to have them legalized.  I can only imagine that "dirty clinics" would pop up again if it was made illegal.  If kids having sex got an actual education on safe sex, abortions would probably topple.

When I went to college in 1999, there were sex ed workshops offered (possibly mandatory, can't remember) to all freshmen, possibly even a part of orientation.  They basically showed people how to put a condom on and explained some stuff about other birth controls.  When I was a sophomore, my then girlfriend led one of the classes, she had some great/sad stories on how ignorant some of the kids were with their questions.  Now ignore pregnancy and think about the gay kids and HIV... or the sexually active kids who show up already infected with something or pregnant after their senior summer who are too afraid to speak up or even get tested.  Granted this was over ten years ago and I'm not on a campus anymore, but I don't think sex ed has improved since then.

For what it's worth sex ed wise here's what I officially got:  4th grade, read There's a Boy in the Girl's bathroom, and a visit to the girls bathroom where we all asked about the mysterious box in that room, nothing was explained; 6/7th grade boys separated from girls we learned some female anatomy, but were mostly told we're growing hair in places, don't have sex; as freshman/sophomore in high school health class, girls have periods, fallopian tubes, don't have sex.

China White Tea: Why don't they just pull themselves up by their boostraps and make their own search engine instead of trying to tell other people how to run their business?

Been there, done that.

Not sure why subby chose Newsmax, but didn't that seem like a surprisingly reasonable and fair report coming from Newsmax!?

Hey, I'm all for this, but Google can't really take the moral high road, when I search for "Lenovo support" or "HP support" first results brings up a list of scamster tech "support" companies that bilk the old and uneducated into paying three hundred dollars to fix "problems on their PC" that they never had.

Agreed. It's almost like for once they begrudgingly admit things are silly here.

I'm sure it will pass.

Lord Dimwit: What I don't get are the people who would rather let a woman die (and take the fetus with her!) than let her have an abortion. That just makes no sense to me.

Isn't this akin to the philosophical thought experiments - "say you are at the points lever for a railway, and some evil guy has tied up 4 people on the railway track, and another person on the siding. The train is almost here so you don't have time to do anything but either pull the lever or not." A lot of people will choose to do nothing, and let more people die, than intervene and save a net three lives. So equally some people would prefer to passively let both mother and baby die, rather than intervene and save the mother.

Lord Dimwit: zimbach: ProdigalSigh: I've been getting "Should Obama be Impeached," banner ads on Youtube videos lately, I always figure it's because every so often I click on a Righty website from Fark.

I've been getting promoted tweets from John Bolton, mustachioed UN ambassador for the US appointed by Bush the Lesser, on my Twitter feed, saying stuff like "Obama is the worst president ever" and "We're eating Iran's shiat!" (paraphrasing, but not by much) followed by "click to agree". I don't even follow right-wing political feeds. Maybe it's because of Fark, since I see those "Obama: most embarrassing president since Clinton" ads on Youtube and Facebook and other places too. Goddamn tracker scripts.

But anyway, "crisis pregnancy centers" are evil, deceptive scam shops that rightly should be excluded from searches for abortion services. They wouldn't have to be. I know the FDA got after those "Cancer Treatment Centers of America" for not actually, you know, treating cancer. Would the FDA be able to go after these centers for misreprenting themselves as providing a medical service? I would think at a minimum they would be required to refer a pregnant woman to a doctor if her pregnancy was in any way above normal risk.

Could they argue that Passages Malibu is not an addiction recovery service but just a posh resort/cult compound? I see those suckers advertising on E! reality shows, where just the stars can afford it, not the average viewer.

That is the closest they will get to coming close to using that word correctly and yet, they are still 90 yards away.

I know that metaphor sucks, so does calling anything that's not fascism, fascism. Fascist like? Maybe ok depending on hitting more than 7 of the 14 points. Sliding down the slope of fascism? Fine if you hit at least 2. Flat out calling something fascist? Dumb.

Soup4Bonnie: There are more than 4,000 crisis pregnancy centers across the country, which according to NARAL, actively dissuade women from undergoing abortions by falsely claiming that abortion can lead to breast cancer, sterility and psychological trauma. The group also says that the centers claim birth control pills cause abortion.

I sure wish those jerks could be sued for medical malpractice.

Isn't it amazing when you search in "Google" for "Alternatives to abortion services" the first ad is fro an abortion service.
As usual google is lying and playing politics.

What's REALLY amazing is that JamesMadison1791 is so mentally retarded, yet he apparently typed that entire post by banging his willy on the key baord.

Google search for: alternatives to abortion services

Maybe he searches for abortion clinics a lot, so what comesup first for him is abortion clinics. The Google algorhythm takes last searches and visited sites into account IIRC.

Well, that would explain why my first 17 attempts had some variation on horny grannies, midget transsexuals cross-dressing collies and crush fetish. One time I had a page for an old transsexual midget having 'relations' with a female collie dressed like Bob the Builder while they stomped on little frogs.

I thought my Google was broken.

palladiate: These comments are precious.

Are medically-induced abortions sometimes necessary? Sadly, yes. But, there are right and wrong ways to perform those abortions - using a vacuum pump, spreader clamps and steel probe attached to a steel wand is the wrong way. Using herbal medications and natural cleansing is the right way.

I must have missed the drum circle at the last RNC.

For what it's worth, herbal medications are the prescribed method in the Bible (Numbers 5:19-28).  Bitter water is a reference to an herbal abortifacient tea (possibly silphium).

Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, "If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you. But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband"- here the priest is to put the woman under this curse-"may the Lord cause you to become a curse among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries."

"'Then the woman is to say, "Amen. So be it."

"'The priest is to write these curses on a scroll and then wash them off into the bitter water. He shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering will enter her. The priest is to take from her hands the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the Lord and bring it to the altar. The priest is then to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial offering and burn it on the altar; after that, he is to have the woman drink the water. If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse. If, however, the woman has not made herself impure, but is clean, she will be cleared of guilt and will be able to have children.
